Brief History of Bangladesh Women’s National Cricket Team

The Bangladesh women’s national cricket team debuted internationally in July 2007, winning matches against Thailand at the 2007 ACC Women’s Tournament. Bangladesh gained ODI status in 2011 after finishing fifth in the World Cup Qualifier. They made their first appearance in a major tournament at the 2014 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 as hosts. They also won the Women’s Asia Cup in the year 2018 and the team has since become increasingly competitive in Asian women’s cricket. They made their 50-over World Cup debut in 2022 and have participated in every World Twenty20 since 2014.

ICC Women’s World Cup:

Bangladesh has had limited participation in the Cricket World Cup. For many years, from 1973 to 2013, Bangladesh either did not participate or did not qualify for the tournament. This includes the first nine World Cups. Their first appearance in the World Cup came in 2022. In this tournament, Bangladesh played in the group stage but didn’t advance further. They finished 7th out of 8 teams, winning just a game and losing 6. This record shows that Bangladesh is relatively new to the Women’s Cricket World Cup and is still working on improving their performance at this highest level of competition.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup:

Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team has had limited success in the T20 World Cup. They didn’t qualify for the first three tournaments in 2009, 2010, and 2012. Bangladesh first appeared in the T20 World Cup in 2014. Since then, they’ve participated in five tournaments from 2014 to 2023. In all of these appearances, Bangladesh has not advanced past the group stage. They’ve usually finished near the bottom of the rankings, placing 9th or 10th out of 10 teams Their only wins came in 2014. This record shows that while Bangladesh has become a regular participant in the T20 World Cup, they’re still working on becoming more competitive at this level.

Asian Games:

Bangladesh has participated in cricket at the Asian Games three times. In 2010, clinched the silver medal, winning 3 out of their four games and four years later, in 2014, repeated their performance, again clinching the silver. Most recently, in 2022, Bangladesh won the bronze medal. This time, they played 3 games, won 1, lost 1, and had 1 game with no result. Overall, Bangladesh has shown consistent performance in cricket at the Asian Games, always finishing in the top three positions.

South Asian Games:

Bangladesh had an outstanding performance in cricket at the 2019 South Asian Games. They became the champions, clinching the gold medal. Bangladesh played a total of 4 games in the tournament. They won all 4 of these games, with no losses, ties, or no-results, signing off with a perfect record of 4 wins.

ACC Women’s Tournament:

Bangladesh showed excellent performance in the 2007 ACC Women’s Tournament, emerging as the champions. Bangladesh’s journey in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier has been a gradual progression. They did not participate in the 2003 and 2008 events. In 2011, they made their debut and reached the quarterfinal, finishing in the 5th position out of 10 teams. They played 5 games, winning 2 and losing 3. In 2017, Bangladesh advanced to the Super-Six stage but didn’t qualify for the final round. They played 7 games, winning 3 and losing 4. The most recent qualifier in 2021 saw Bangladesh again reach the Super-Six stage. This time, they played 3 games, winning 2 and losing 1, their consistent presence in the later stages of the qualifiers shows steady improvement in their women’s cricket program.
