Why Did Charlotte Edwards Step Away from Coaching Mumbai Indians and Sydney Sixers?

Charlotte Edwards, a legend in women’s cricket, has decided to leave her coaching positions in several international and domestic competitions in order to focus entirely on her new duty as head coach of the England women’s cricket team. Edwards has a legendary cricket career, both as a coach and as a player. She led England to multiple victories, including two World Cups and five Ashes series, during her illustrious 20-year playing career. She retired in 2017 and has since moved smoothly into coaching, where she has achieved incredible success. She started coaching locally with Southern Vipers and Hampshire Cricket. The Vipers became the most successful domestic team in English women’s cricket when Edwards led them to numerous victories in the Charlotte Edwards Cup and the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

In a heartfelt social media post, she praised Hampshire Cricket for providing her with the chance eight years ago and referred to the team as her “forever home.” As head coach of the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia, Edwards led the team to the WBBL 2022–2023 Final and the WBBL championship. The Sixers regained their position as one of the elite teams in the tournament and finished first in the standings under her direction.

Before winning the championship in 2023, Edwards led the Southern Brave to consecutive finals in 2021 and 2022. Edwards demonstrated her tactical skill and capacity to create a winning culture as her Brave team dominated the competition and won the title in spectacular fashion.

Possibly the most well-known achievement of her coaching career occurred during the first Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India, where she guided the Mumbai Indians Women’s team to victory in both 2023 and 2025. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, her team raised the coveted trophy in front of a large crowd, adding yet another valued feather to Edwards’ coaching cap.

Edwards acknowledged each and every franchise she collaborated with in her heartfelt social media post, stating, “To the players, staff and fans — thank you so much for all your unconditional support over the years. It’s the people that make it so special and I’ve been so lucky to work with so many great people who will now be lifelong friends.”

Edwards is charged with bringing England women’s cricket back to life as she starts this new chapter, following a difficult time that included a 16-0 Ashes loss to Australia and a poor ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign. A home series against the West Indies in May and India’s white-ball trip are among her first responsibilities. Additionally, the team is getting up for the 2026 domestic T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Mumbai Indians, one of the franchises she is leaving, praised Edwards for her leadership and impact. A spokesperson stated, “Charlotte Edwards has been a leader for whom the entire #OneFamily has enormous admiration, appreciation, and respect. The incredible achievements that Charlotte has driven the team towards include winning two titles in three years, developing and inspiring the girls to play their best cricket, taking the MI legacy forward and bringing joy to the MI Paltan. We wish her all the very best and are grateful for everything she has brought to our team over the past three years.”

Given her extensive expertise and winning mindset, Edwards as England’s head coach is viewed as a turning point for the squad. Her legacy as a standout player and coach continues to motivate her as she embarks on this new phase, and her commitment to England women’s cricket is anticipated to pay off in the years to come. Fans will be anxious to see if Charlotte Edwards can duplicate her franchise success on the global scene, especially with a number of ICC tournaments planned and a talented pool of English players at her disposal.
