In the 60th match of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup at Birmingham, Warwickshire Women delivered a commanding performance to outclass Essex Women by 7 wickets with 81 balls to spare.
Choosing to field first, Warwickshire’s opening bowler Alexa Stonehouse set the tone immediately by dismissing Essex captain Grace Scrivens for a four-ball duck on the fourth ball of the match, caught by wicketkeeper Natasha Wraith. Bryony Gillgrass and Alice Macleod steadied the ship with a 57-run stand for the second wicket, taking the team past fifty. However, Phoebe Brett broke the partnership in the 13th over by having Gillgrass caught behind for 17 (35 balls). Shortly after, Amu Surenkumar trapped Macleod lbw for an aggressive 34 (38 balls, 5 fours) at 64/3.
Brett struck again in the 19th over to bowl Ella Claridge for 12, leaving Essex at 83/4. Sophia Smale and Joanne Gardner then attempted a mini-recovery, putting together 32 runs for the fifth wicket before Em Arlott had Gardner caught by Katie George for 20 off 19 balls. Joining Smale, Liberty Heap anchored a magnificent 75-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Heap brought up a spirited half-century, scoring 52 off 45 deliveries (7 fours, 1 six), while Smale ground out a solid 42 off 72 balls (4 fours). The game flipped again when Brett dismissed Smale, caught by Arlott at 190/6. Hannah Baker then triggered a sharp late-order collapse.
Baker stammed Heap off Wraith’s swift gloves at 192/7, before Brett trapped Amelie Bishop lbw for 2 at 195/8. Baker cleaned up the tail by having Sophie Munro caught by Millie Taylor for 3 and trapping Esmae MacGregor lbw for 4, wrapping up Essex’s innings for 202 in 44.5 overs, with Abtaha Maqsood left stranded on 3 not out. Warwickshire’s attack was led by Phoebe Brett (4/42 in 10 overs) and Hannah Baker (3/26 in 8.5 overs). Alexa Stonehouse (1/34 in 7 overs), Em Arlott (1/32 in 7 overs), and Amu Surenkumar (1/24 in 6 overs) each grabbed a wicket, while Millie Taylor (0/25 in 4 overs) and Brooke Halliday (0/16 in 2 overs) went wicketless.
Chasing 203 for victory, Warwickshire’s pursuit met early resistance from Esmae MacGregor. MacGregor trapped opener Amu Surenkumar lbw for 10 at 28/1, and quickly followed up by removing Meg Austin, who made a brisk 25 off 20 balls (5 fours) before edging behind to keeper Ella Claridge at 41/2. Captain Katie George then joined Brooke Halliday to reconstruct the chase with a steady 45-run third-wicket partnership. Abtaha Maqsood briefly gave Essex hope by dismissing Halliday for 22 (33 balls) at 86/3.
However, that proved to be the final breakthrough for Essex. Abigail Freeborn joined captain Katie George at the crease, and the duo completely dominated the remaining overs with an unbroken, blistering 122-run partnership for the fourth wicket. George anchored the chase impeccably, remaining unbeaten on 72 off 99 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Freeborn provided explosive acceleration, smashing 64 not out off just 54 deliveries, laced with 10 boundaries. Warwickshire comfortably crossed the target in 36.3 overs, reaching 208/3 to seal a comprehensive win.
Among Essex’s bowlers, Esmae MacGregor was the pick with 2/39 in 8 overs, while Abtaha Maqsood claimed 1/34 in 6 overs. Sophie Munro (0/32 in 3 overs), Bryony Gillgrass (0/37 in 6.3 overs), Sophia Smale (0/32 in 8 overs), and Amelie Bishop (0/30 in 5 overs) all went without success as Warwickshire’s batters cruised to the finish line.
