Harleen Deol’s fifty, Deandra Dottin’s quick-fire 24 help Gujarat Giants seal their Third Consecutive Triumph

Gujarat Giants led by skipper Ashleigh Gardner were up against the table toppers Delhi Capitals led by skipper Meg Lanning in the 17th game of WPL 2025, at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Meg Lanning leads from the front with a magnificent 92 as Capitals post 177/5

Delhi Capitals openers Shafali Verma and skipper Meg Lanning got their side off to yet another flying start with an 83-run opening partnership, after being asked to bat first. Meghna Singh broke the stand by removing the dangerous Shafali Verma (40 off 27 balls) to provide the first breakthrough for the Giants in the 9th over of the innings.

Skipper Meg Lanning held the Capitals’ innings together, but she kept losing partners from the other end. Meg Lanning continued to switch gears and take the attack to the opposition and came closer to registering herself in the history books with that three-figure mark. Deandra Dottin ended the opposition skipper’s stay at the crease on the penultimate ball of the innings as she departed for a well-crafted 92 off 57 balls.

Wicket-keeper batter Sarah Bryce finished the innings on a high with a maximum to propel the Delhi Capitals to a competitive total of 177/5 in their quota of 20 overs. The Capitals openers Shafali Verma and skipper Meg Lanning scored the bulk of the runs, contributing around 74% of their team’s total.

Meghna Singh (4-0-35-3) and Deandra Dottin (4-0-37-2) were the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat Giants, playing a crucial role in pulling things back after a blazing start from the batters.

Chasing a stiff total of 178, the Giants lost the wicket of Dayalan Hemalatha early as her horrible run continued with the bat in WPL 2025. Harleen Deol joined Beth Mooney at the crease and the duo once again bailed their side out of trouble with a massive 84-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, keeping them in the hunt in the run chase.

Minnu Mani broke the stand by sending the wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney (44 off 35 balls) back to the pavilion in the 12th over of the run chase. Substantial partnerships (45 off 25 balls) between skipper Ashleigh Gardner and Harleen Deol for the 3rd wicket, followed by another vital (34 off 14 balls) partnership between Deandra Dottin and Harleen Deol for the 4th wicket kept the Giants on track in the run chase.

The Giants eventually got over the line with five wickets in hand and three balls to spare. Harleen Deol notched up a match-defining half-century (70* off 49 balls) and guided her side over the line in a challenging run chase. Deandra Dottin’s fireworks (24 off 10 balls) tilted the game heavily in the favour of the Giants, while skipper Ashleigh Gardner also chipped in with a crucial contribution (22 off 13 balls) with the bat for her side.

Shikha Pandey (4-0-31-2) and Jess Jonassen (3.3-0-38-2) picked up a couple of wickets each with the ball, while Marizanne Kapp (4-1-29-0) was impressive with the ball as was Minnu Mani (2-0-15-1), picking the big scalp of Beth Mooney.

Harleen Deol was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-winning innings of 70* off 49 balls. Gujarat Giants reclaimed the 2nd spot in the points table, and the win has also ensured that the Deepti Sharma’s UP Warriorz are knocked out of the ongoing 3rd edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
