Delhi Capitals Conquer UP Warriorz with Shafali-Meg Partnership in WPL 2024

In the ongoing 02 edition of the Women’s Premier League, the clash between UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals resulted in intense cricketing action. Delhi Capitals emerged victorious with a dominant performance, chasing down the target of 120 set by UP Warriorz.

The Delhi Capitals captained by Meg Lanning suffered a defeat to the Mumbai Indians in a final-ball thriller and Alyssa Healy’s UP Warriorz faced 2 run defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, in their respective opening games this season. So it was a match to register their first victory in the WPL 2024.

In the 1st innings where the Delhi bowlers magnificently bowled, and restricted the Capitals to a total score of 119 runs for 9 wickets at the end of their allotted 20 overs. Marizanne Kapp and Radha Yadav played a major role in claiming the majority of wickets for Delhi Capitals.

Marizanne Kapp struck in her first over of the spell, dismissing Vrinda Dinesh for a duck. In the 5th over of the innings, Kapp struck twice and claimed the wickets of the skipper Alyssa Healy for 13 runs and hitting the top-of-off dismissed Tahlia McGrath for a run. Moreover, Marizanne Kapp bowled a maiden and claimed 3 wickets against 5 runs. She bowled a total of 19 dot balls in her allotted 4 overs with a remarkable 1.25 economy.

Radha Yadav too delivered an extraordinary performance with the ball, Radha Yadav picked up crucial wickets at regular intervals, destabilizing the UP Warriorz Women’s batting lineup. Radha Yadav got the better of Grace Harris in the tenth over for 17 runs, Kiran Navgire for 10 runs in the twelfth over, the set batter Shweta Sehrawat at 45 runs, and Sophie Ecclestone for 6 runs at the last bowl of the innings. Her figures of 4 wickets for just 20 runs in her allotted 4 overs not only restricted the flow of runs but also kept the pressure mounted on the UP Warriorz throughout her spell.

The pair as openers have played 11 innings together and have gathered a total of 601 runs, scoring three times 100 plus runs and equally scoring 50 plus runs partnership at an outstanding 60.10 average. They also have the highest total partnership record of 162 runs under their name.

With Delhi on the brink of victory, Meg Lanning departed for 51 runs off 43 balls, and Shafali Verma unbeaten on 64 runs off 43, alongside Jemimah Rodrigues, guided their team to a comprehensive victory. Delhi Capitals reached the target in just 14.3 overs with nine wickets to spare.

The dominant duo of Shafali and Meg again led the scoring and having had the most number of successful partnerships between them, they both individually contributed a huge sum of runs holding the records for the highest individual scores for Delhi.
