Delhi Capitals thrash UP Warriorz by 9 Wickets, Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning complete fifty

Marizanne Kapp and Radha Yadav dismantled the UP Warriorz before, and openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning rub salt into the wound as the Delhi Capitals get off the mark with a morale-boosting win.

The UP Warriorz led by skipper Alyssa Healy suffered a heart-breaking 2-run defeat in their first game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Leg-spinner Asha Sobhana derailed the run chase for the UP Warriorz as she became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in the history of WPL.

The Delhi Capitals led by skipper Meg Lanning ended up on the wrong side in a nervy contest courtesy of a last-ball heroics from Sajeevan Sajana to take Mumbai Indians over the line by 4 wickets in the run chase. The Delhi Capitals were all set to face UP Warriorz in the 4th match of the season.

The Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to field first. After being inserted to bat first, the UP Warriorz got off to a poor start, losing their top order, including the wicket of their skipper Alyssa Healy inside the powerplay. Marizanne Kapp inflicted the damage on the UP Warriorz. Shweta Sehrawat joined Grace Harris at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 24-run partnership for the 4th wicket before Radha Yadav picked up the wicket of a dangerous Grace Harris to provide the fourth breakthrough for Delhi Capitals.

Kiran Navgire joined Shweta Sehrawat at the crease and the duo stitched a crucial 17-run partnership for the 5th wicket before Radha Yadav picked up the wicket of Kiran Navgire to provide the 5th breakthrough for her side. Poonam Khemnar joined Shweta Sehrawat at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 28-run partnership for the 6th wicket before Arundhati Reddy picked up the wicket of Poonam Khemnar to provide the breakthrough for the Delhi Capitals.

Deepti Sharma joined Shweta Sehrawat at the crease and the duo stitched a 24-run partnership for the 7th wicket before Radha Yadav came back and picked up the much-needed wicket of Shweta Sehrawat to provide the 7th breakthrough for her side. The UP Warriorz eventually ended up with a total of 119/9 in their quota of overs.

Shweta Sehrawat (45 off 42 balls) and Grace Harris (17 off 18 balls) were the top performers with the bat for the UP Warriorz. Marizanne Kapp (4-1-5-3) and Radha Yadav (4-0-20-4) were the top performers with the ball for the Delhi Capitals. Chasing a target of 120, the Delhi Capitals openers got off to a flying start, scoring at almost 10 runs an over in the powerplay. The duo continued to chip away at the target and scored (82) more than double the score of UP Warriorz at the halfway stage.

Both the openers completed their respective half-centuries and the Delhi Capitals were on the doorstep of victory when Sophie Ecclestone picked up the wicket of skipper Meg Lanning to provide the breakthrough, a little too late for the UP Warriorz. With just one run needed for the Capitals to get their first points on the board, Jemimah Rodrigues comes in and laps the ball to the fine-leg fence.

The Delhi Capitals claimed their maiden victory in the ongoing edition of the tournament. Shafali Verma (64 off 43 balls) and Meg Lanning (51 off 43 balls) were the top performers with the bat for the Delhi Capitals. Sophie Ecclestone (3.3-0-31-1) was the only wicket-taker for the UP Warriorz. Marizanne Kapp was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-winning (4-1-5-3) spell in the powerplay, dismantling the UP Warriorz top order inside the powerplay. Her scalps included skipper Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, and Dinesh Vrinda.
