The thirteenth match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 saw West Indies claim a commanding victory over Bangladesh, chasing down a modest target of 104 with 43 balls to spare.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews won the toss and opted to bowl first. Bangladesh’s innings got off to a cautious start, ending the powerplay at 33 for 2. Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty and Sobhana Mostary attempted to rebuild with a 40-run stand, but once that partnership was broken, the Bangladeshi innings fell apart. West Indies’ bowlers dominated the final 7 overs, allowing just 30 more runs. Karishma Ramharack was the standout, taking 4 for 17, while Joty top-scored for Bangladesh with a battling 39 off 44 balls.
In response, West Indies raced ahead as Matthews played aggressively, smashing six boundaries within the powerplay. Although Marufa Akter ended the opening partnership at 52 by dismissing Matthews at 34 off 22, West Indies remained in control. Stafanie Taylor, playing despite a knee issue, hit some boundaries before retiring hurt after 10 overs. Shemaine Campbelle batted with intent but fell while attempting a big shot. Deandra Dottin then wrapped up the chase in style, hitting two massive sixes to seal the 8-wicket win. Besides Marufa, Nahida Akter was the only other Bangladeshi bowler to pick up a wicket.
Karishma Ramharack’s match-winning 4-wicket haul earned her the Player of the Match award, as West Indies’ comprehensive all-round display not only secured a vital win but also boosted their net run rate.
The victory quickly became a talking point on social media platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter), where fans lauded the West Indies’ dominant performance.
