The ninth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup is being played in Sri Lanka in the T20 format. With all the matches played in Dambulla, it is scheduled from 19th July to 28th July. The third match of the competition was played between Thailand and Malaysia. Both teams made it to the Asia Cup by topping the ACC Premiere Cup, the qualifier competition to the Asia Cup.

Nannapat Koncharoenkai 40 (Thailand):
The wicketkeeper-batter from Thailand was impressive with the bat in Thailand’s clash against Malaysia. Deciding to bat first, Thailand didn’t get off to a good start, losing their first wicket for 16. Nannapat came into bat at three and took advantage of the field restrictions. She was involved in a 48-run stand for the fourth wicket with Phannita Maya before Nannapat was dismissed for 40. She scored 40 off 35 balls, hitting six boundaries in her innings. Her performance helped her side build a total of 133. She also received the Player of the Match award for her brilliant innings.

Mahirat Ismail 3/16 (Malaysia):
The Malaysian spinner was exceptional with the ball in their first Asia Cup match of the ongoing ninth edition against Thailand. Mahirat’s first victim was the Thailand skipper, dismissing her for 9. Her second wicket was crucial as she dismissed the well-set Nannapat Koncharoenkai for 40 and her third wicket had come in the form of Chanida Sutthiruang. She was the standout bowler for Malaysia, finishing with figures of 3 for 16 in four overs.

Onnicha Kamchomphu 2/18 (Thailand):
The bowling all-rounder from Thailand was the standout bowler for her team, finishing with a spell of 2 for 18. Thailand was defending a total of 134 against Malaysia. The off spinner provided Thailand with the first breakthrough by dismissing the Malaysian skipper Winifred Duraisingam for 22 after rattling her stumps. Her second wicket was also a bowled dismissal, getting rid of Jamhadia Intan for 6.
Wan Julia 52 (Malaysia):
Though Malaysia lost the match by 22 runs while chasing 134, it was Malaysian opener Wan Julia who kept her side in the chase. The right-handed batter also became the first Malaysian batter to score a fifty in the Women’s Asia Cup, which was also her maiden fifty in T20Is. She smashed six boundaries in her innings of 52 before getting run out in the 18th over. Her wicket also dismantled Malaysia’s chances of winning the match.
