We witnessed very one-sided encounters on the opening day of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024. Nepal defeated UAE by six wickets in the first game of the tournament and India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in the second game of the opening day.

Thailand skipper Thipatcha Putthawong won the toss and opted to bat first. The Thailand opener Nattaya Boochatham got her side off to a flying start, scoring 16 runs in the first over of the innings. They lost the wicket of Nannaphat Chaihan in the 2nd over of the innings. Suabika Manivannan provided the first breakthrough for Malaysia. Nattaya Boochatham soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Malaysia.

Skipper Thipatcha Putthawong joined wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai at the crease and the duo stitched a crucial 24-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to lead some sort of recovery for Thailand. Mahirah Izzati Ismail picked up the big wicket of the opposition skipper Thipatcha Putthawong to provide the 3rd breakthrough for her side.

Phannita Maya joined wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 48-run partnership for the 4th wicket to take their side close to the 100-run mark. Mahirah Izzati Ismail came back and picked up the wicket of the wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai to provide for Malaysia.

Thailand eventually ended up with a competitive total of 133/6 in their quota of overs. Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai (40 off 35 balls), Phannita Maya (29 off 28 balls), and Nattaya Boochatham (18 off 10 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Thailand. Mahirah Izzati Ismail (4-0-16-3), Aisya Eleesa (4-0-21-1), and Suaika Manivannan (2-0-14-1) were the top performers with the ball for Malaysia.

Chasing a target of 134, Malaysia got off to a very promising start, with a 68-run opening stand scoring over six runs an over. Onnicha Kamchomphu cleaned up the opposition skipper Winifred Duraisingam to provide the first breakthrough for Thailand. Elsa Hunter joined wicket-keeper batter Wan Julia at the crease and the duo stitched a crucial 15-run partnership for the 2nd wicket to bring their side in a position of strength in the run chase. Suleeporn Laomi cleaned up Elsa Hunter to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side.

Malaysia suffered a horrible collapse as they lost their next six wickets for just 28 runs. They were restricted to 111/8 in their quota of overs, falling short of the target by 22 runs. Wicket-keeper batter Wan Julia (52 off 53 balls), and skipper Winifred Duraisingam (22 off 28 balls), were the top performers with the bat for Malaysia. Onnicha Kamchomphu (4-0-20-2), Nattaya Boochatham (4-1-20-1), Chanida Sutthiruang (4-0-12-1), and skipper Thipatcha Putthawong (3-0-15-1) were the top performers with the ball for Thailand.

Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-winning performance (40 off 35 balls) with the bat. Apart from her contributions with the bat, she has also affected a couple of run outs and one stumping with the gloves in hand.
