Bio:
Hayley Matthews is an experienced and reliable batting all-rounder who made her T20 international debut on September 27, 2014, against New Zealand during the home bilateral series in Kingstown. She then made her ODI debut on November 11, 2014, against Australia during the ICC Women’s Championship in Sydney, where she played an absolute fine innings, scoring 55 runs off 86 balls, helping the West Indies win the match by 3 wickets.
Hayley also represented her country in Javelin at several track and field competitions. Fortunately, she changed her mind and chose cricket as a career option and later broke various records and made her name in the cricketing world. The biggest achievement of Hayley’s career came in the 2016 Women’s World T20, where she won the World Cup at just 17 years of age, playing a memorable inning of 66 runs off 45 balls in final to help the West Indies chase down a competitive 149 to win their maiden World Cup title against three-time World Champions Australia.
Matthews was appointed as vice-captain of the West Indies in the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup. After that, in June 2022, Matthews was named as the captain of the West Indies women’s cricket team, taking over from Stafanie Taylor. She also led Barbados in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. On April 15th, 2024, Hayley was named Wisden’s Leading T20 Cricketer in 2023.
Matthews has immense experience playing in various domestic leagues. She represented the Tasmania Tigers in the Women’s National Cricket League and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League. After that, in 2021, she was drafted by the Welsh Fire for the inaugural season of the Hundred and continued with the team in the 2022 season. In March 2023, Matthews was selected to play for the Mumbai Indians in the 2023 Women’s Premier League, where she performed exceptionally, showing an all-round performance by scoring 271 runs and taking 16 wickets in that league, helping her team clinch the WPL title. In WPL 2023, she won the Purple Cap and was awarded as the Player of the Tournament for her all-round performance. She also played for the Warriors team in two FairBreak Invitational T20 competitions and here again, significantly contributed to her side’s success.
