Annabel Sutherland Finds Batting Rhythm After Stepping Away from Melbourne Stars Captaincy

Annabel Sutherland has begun Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 12 in emphatic fashion, declaring herself in “a good place” with her T20 game after an all-round masterclass that powered Melbourne Stars to an 18-run win over defending champions Hobart Hurricanes at Junction Oval on 29 October 2026. The 25-year-old former Stars skipper struck 57 from 36 balls and claimed 3 for 34, earning Player of the Match as Melbourne opened their campaign with a statement victory.

Hurricanes captain Nicola Carey won the toss and opted to field, but Sutherland, arriving at No.4, immediately imposed herself. Her 36-ball innings featured five boundaries and two sixes, and she shared a decisive 109-run partnership with returning captain Meg Lanning as the Stars compiled 192 for 4 in their 20 overs against the Hurricanes.

With the ball, Sutherland was equally influential. She removed Rachel Trenaman for 24 off 17, dismissed skipper Carey for 32 off 25, and accounted for Ruth Johnston for a first-ball duck, finishing with excellent figures of 4-0-34-3 as Hobart fell short at 174 for 8.

For Sutherland, the performance reflected both form and freedom. Having handed the captaincy back to Lanning after leading the Stars for two seasons, she believes the change has restored valuable mental bandwidth. “I think (it’s giving me) just a little bit more mental space, and that just gives me a little bit of that capacity back, especially coming off an Australian tour,” she said. “But at the end of the day, my cricket brain doesn’t really switch off too much.”

That clarity was evident in her batting. Sutherland’s knock was her fifth WBBL half-century and a timely demonstration of her growing comfort in the middle order, where her ability to manoeuvre against both pace and spin will be central to Melbourne’s plans following Marizanne Kapp’s departure. “I feel in a really good place,” she said. “I feel like I’ve got (scoring) options all around the ground, (against) spin and pace.”

Her recent record suggests the Stars are right to back her at No.4. Sutherland was named Player of the Tournament in The Hundred in August after compiling 315 runs at an average of 63 and a strike rate of 153, alongside 11 wickets for Leeds. Across her past three seasons in England’s franchise competition batting at No.4, she has averaged 48.86 while striking at 141.

The Stars’ momentum, however, was checked in Adelaide. In the fourth match of WBBL 12 at Karen Rolton Oval on 31 October, Tahlia McGrath’s Adelaide Strikers defeated Melbourne by 21 runs. Lanning won the toss and chose to bowl, but the Strikers posted 185 for 2 before restricting the Stars to 164 for 7.

Sutherland again contributed in both departments. She dismissed Maia Bouchier for 30 off 21 balls and returned figures of 4-0-40-1, before making 29 from 19 deliveries at No.4 in the chase, including three fours and a six. Yet Amanda-Jade Wellington’s 3 for 28 proved decisive as Melbourne fell 21 runs short.

The early fluctuation underlines why Sutherland wants Melbourne to bank results quickly in a congested start to the season. “Banking some wins early (is important), especially with the way that the schedule has panned out,” she said after the Hurricanes win. “We’ve got an outstanding bowling attack, both spin and pace, all bases covered, which I think we probably haven’t quite had in the past couple of years.”

Melbourne’s broader ambition remains unchanged. Despite reaching the finals in WBBL 11 with 11 points from 10 games, their campaign ended in a 28-run knockout defeat to Sophie Devine’s Perth Scorchers on 9 December 2025. The Stars remain the only WBBL franchise yet to win the title, with their best result a runner-up finish in the 2020 edition.

Sutherland’s role, therefore, extends beyond statistics. Still a sounding board for Lanning, she remains deeply involved in tactical decisions despite no longer carrying the captain’s burden. “Nothing really changes for me on the field. I felt like Meg and I worked really well together (on Thursday), just working through the bowling changes and the options,” she said.

The Stars will look to convert that collaboration into consistency when they host Beth Mooney’s Perth Scorchers at Junction Oval on 2 November 2026, in the eighth match of the tournament from 1:40 PM IST. If Sutherland sustains the balance, intent and clarity she showed in the first couple of games, Melbourne’s long wait for a maiden WBBL title may finally arrive.
