Bio:
Priya Punia hails from a middle-class family in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Her father worked as a head clerk in the Indian Survey Department, while her mother was a housewife. Priya had always been involved in sports, initially developing an affinity for badminton during her childhood. However, her interest shifted towards cricket, igniting her dreams in the sport.
The right-handed batter began to shine with her impressive performances in various tournaments. In the 2018 One Day Championship in Bengaluru, Priya smashed 407 runs in 8 matches at an average of 50, catching the attention of selectors for the national team. She received the call-up to play for India in the T20I series against New Zealand but could only manage 9 runs in 3 games. It was a disappointing start to her international career, echoing the challenges she had faced since childhood. However, Priya always possessed the resilience to bounce back in style.
Her next opportunity came when she received her ODI cap in 2019 against South Africa. Priya justified all the sacrifices made by her family with a remarkable performance. In her debut ODI, she played a match-winning knock (75* off 125 balls), guiding her team to a brilliant victory against South Africa, which remains her highest score in ODIs as of 2024.
Despite her impressive performances, Priya surprisingly went unsold in both editions of the WPL. However, her story exemplifies resilience and determination. Across formats, she has amassed over 250 runs in more than 10 appearances. Priya, serves as an inspiration, embodying the famous saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
