Nadine de Klerk Completes 2000 International Runs in South Africa’s Crucial Win Over Bangladesh

Nadine de Klerk reached the 2,000 international runs milestone as South Africa clung to a nervy victory over Bangladesh in a high-stakes Group A finale at Lord’s on 28 June 2026, a result that kept Laura Wolvaardt’s side alive in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Needing a win to stay in semi-final contention, South Africa scraped home by four wickets with four balls to spare in a tense chase of 118; De Klerk, coming in at No. 6, contributed a vital 15 off 14 to push her career aggregate past the landmark she headed into the game five runs shy of.

The contest at the Home of Cricket was shaped early by South Africa’s new-ball pressure. Marizanne Kapp bowled a stunning opening spell, four overs, 1/9 and the prized scalp of Juairiya Ferdous with the first ball, while Shabnim Ismail’s pace compounded Bangladesh’s early trouble. Bangladesh were 26 for 2 after seven overs, their momentum stemmed by disciplined, incisive bowling. Bangladesh battled back through patient batting, chiefly a composed 42 off 48 by Sobhana Mostary, but De Klerk struck in the 17th over, dismissing Mostary to leave Bangladesh 117 for 5 at the end of 20.

Chasing 118 on a pitch that kept the ball low and the spinners in play, South Africa never quite found rhythm. De Klerk’s cameo, two boundaries among her 15 runs, was small in volume but large in import, stabilising the lower order and nudging the chase through tight phases as Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, fought gamely. The match went to the final over before South Africa held their nerve, sealing qualification hopes with four wickets in hand. Kapp’s all-round evening earned her Player of the Match as her early bowling and control under pressure proved decisive.

De Klerk’s journey to 2,000 runs is notable for its balance across formats. Since her ODI debut on 9 May 2017 at Potchefstroom, she has amassed 1,058 runs in 64 ODIs at a strike rate of 89.05 and an average of 24.60, including three fifties. In T20Is, debuting 13 February 2018, she added 838 runs in 86 matches at a strike rate of 105.54 and an average of 23.94; she is yet to post a T20 international half-century.

She made her Test debut in June 2022 at Taunton and has scored a solitary Test half-century, bringing her Test tally to 114 runs at an average of 16.28 in 4 matches so far.

This World Cup has seen De Klerk in familiar all-round form. Playing her fourth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, she has collected 152 tournament runs across previous editions and added 82 runs in the current campaign at a strike rate of 115.49, alongside five wickets at an average of 23.40 and an economy of 9.00. Her ability to contribute with both bat and ball, and to deliver under pressure, remains a crucial asset for a South African side balancing youthful flair with experienced heads.

South Africa advances to the 2nd semi-final to face hosts, England, at Kennington Oval, London, on 2nd July 2026, from 11 PM IST. The significance of De Klerk’s milestone is twofold: a personal landmark reflecting consistent development since her 2017 debut, and a timely contribution when the squad needed grit most.

At 26, she sits on a platform that mixes seam-bowling sting, useful lower-order runs and tournament experience; Lord’s provided the theatre for another step in a career that continues to grow in stature on the world stage.
