Nat Sciver-Brunt Ruled Out of India and New Zealand T20I Series; Maia Bouchier and Charis Pavely Added as Cover

England’s preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 have suffered a significant blow, with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt ruled out of both the upcoming India and New Zealand series as she continues rehabilitation from a calf tear.

The update was confirmed by ECB, with the board also announcing the inclusion of Maia Bouchier and Charis Pavely in the New Zealand T20I squad as cover options ahead of England’s final preparations before the World Cup at home.

England are also set to be without experienced opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge for the New Zealand T20I series, with the batter unavailable due to the imminent birth of her first child. The absences leave England without two of their most experienced players during a crucial phase of preparation leading into the tournament.

Sciver-Brunt’s injury is particularly significant given her role within the side. Since taking over the captaincy, the all-rounder has remained central to England’s batting plans while also contributing as a dependable seam-bowling option. Her absence means England will head into both the India and New Zealand series without their captain and one of the most experienced players in the squad.

The timing of the setback also adds pressure to England’s preparations. The series against India and New Zealand are expected to serve as England’s final opportunities to settle combinations in home conditions before the start of the T20 World Cup. With Sciver-Brunt unavailable, England are now likely to hand additional responsibility to players like Charlie Dean and Sophia Dunkley, while younger players are set to receive an extended opportunity.

One of those players is Maia Bouchier, who has already made an immediate impact after being drafted into England’s ODI squad as cover for Sciver-Brunt. Bouchier top-scored for England with 59 in the opening ODI against New Zealand in Durham, helping England secure victory in the first match of the series. She retained her place in the squad for the washed-out second ODI in Northampton before making way for Jodi Grewcock in the rain-affected third game in Cardiff, which New Zealand won through the DLS method to level the series 1-1.

Bouchier’s performances have strengthened her case ahead of the World Cup, particularly at a time when England are dealing with multiple absences in the top order. Her ability to score quickly during the powerplay and adapt to different batting positions gives England another flexible option heading into the tournament.

Meanwhile, Charis Pavely’s inclusion is a reward for an outstanding domestic season. The youngster had initially joined the ODI squad as batting cover for Alice Capsey, who was dealing with illness concerns, though Pavely did not feature in the playing XI. However, her form in the One-Day Cup has been difficult to ignore. Pavely has scored two centuries and three half-centuries in her first eight matches of the season, emerging as one of the standout young batters in domestic cricket.

With the World Cup rapidly approaching, England will hope Sciver-Brunt recovers in time for the competition itself. Until then, the focus shifts toward building momentum despite setbacks, testing squad depth and ensuring the side remains prepared for the pressure of a home global tournament.
