Marizanne Kapp Leads as South Africa Women Beat Bangladesh by 4 Wickets to Keep Semi-Final Hopes Alive

South Africa Women produced a composed all-round performance to secure a four-wicket victory over Bangladesh Women in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, successfully chasing 118 with four balls to spare after restricting the hosts to 117/5 in 20 overs. The visitors kept their composure despite losing wickets at regular intervals, with Annerie Dercksen’s match-winning 45 off 45 balls and Marizanne Kapp’s valuable all-round display proving decisive.

Bangladesh Women’s innings got off to the worst possible start as Marizanne Kapp struck with the very first over. Juairiya Ferdous was dismissed for 0 off 1 ball, the hosts 1/1 in just 0.1 overs. Kapp’s disciplined new-ball spell immediately handed South Africa the early advantage. Taj Nehar then joined Sobhana Mostary, and the pair attempted to rebuild carefully. However, scoring remained difficult against accurate bowling from Shabnim Ismail and Kapp. The second-wicket partnership managed only 13 runs, with Taj Nehar contributing 1 from 12 deliveries before Shabnim Ismail trapped her lbw, reducing Bangladesh to 14/2 in 4 overs.

With two wickets down inside the powerplay, Sobhana Mostary and Sharmin Akhter steadied the innings through the most productive stand of the match. The duo added 56 runs for the third wicket, rotating strike effectively while punishing loose deliveries whenever available. Sobhana anchored the partnership with a patient 42 off 48 balls, striking three boundaries and one six, while Sharmin supported well with 22 from 29 balls, including one boundary. Their partnership gradually shifted momentum towards Bangladesh and helped the innings recover after the shaky beginning. Just when Bangladesh looked set for a strong finish, Nonkululeko Mlaba broke the stand, by dismissing Sharmin at 70/3 in 14.2 overs, ending the crucial rebuilding effort.

Captain Nigar Sultana then injected much-needed momentum during the death overs. Joining Sobhana Mostary, she ensured Bangladesh accelerated after a slow middle phase. The pair shared a valuable 24-run fourth-wicket partnership, but South Africa struck again when Nadine de Klerk removed Sobhana for a well-made 42, leaving Bangladesh at 77/4 in 16.3 overs. Despite losing the experienced batter, Nigar continued to attack intelligently. Shorna Akter chipped in with 4 off 5 balls, adding 11 runs for the fifth wicket before she became Nonkululeko Mlaba’s second victim, caught off Ismail’s bowling combination at 95/5 in 18.1 overs. Nigar remained unbeaten on 32 from just 20 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and one six, while Ritu Moni stayed unbeaten on 1 off 5 balls as Bangladesh finished on 117/5 in their allotted 20 overs, helped by 15 extras.

South Africa’s bowling effort was disciplined throughout. Marizanne Kapp delivered an outstanding opening spell, finishing with 1/9 in 4 overs at an economy of 2.25, setting the tone from the outset. Shabnim Ismail maintained relentless pressure, claiming 1/15 in 4 overs, while Nonkululeko Mlaba emerged as the most successful bowler with 2/22 from her 4 overs, breaking the key middle-order partnerships. Nadine de Klerk contributed with 1/17 in 2 overs, dismissing the well-set Sobhana Mostary at a crucial stage. Ayabonga Khaka bowled her four overs for 29 runs without a wicket, and Chloe Tryon supported effectively with 2 overs costing only 13 runs, ensuring Bangladesh never gained complete control.

Chasing 118, South Africa also endured an uneasy start. Bangladesh struck in the opening over when Marufa Akter removed captain Laura Wolvaardt for 0, reducing the visitors to 1/1 in 0.1 overs. Tazmin Brits and Annerie Dercksen responded with a composed 51-run partnership for the second wicket, carefully rebuilding the innings after the early setback. Brits contributed 20 off 24 balls, hitting two boundaries, while Dercksen settled into the chase with maturity. Their partnership put South Africa back on track before Nahida Akter dismissed Brits at 52/2 in 8.5 overs.

The momentum briefly swung back towards Bangladesh when Sanjida Akter Meghla removed Dane van Niekerk for 4, leaving South Africa at 59/3 in 9.6 overs. However, Dercksen found an ideal partner in Marizanne Kapp, and together they produced the defining partnership of the chase. Their 43-run fourth-wicket stand absorbed the pressure while steadily reducing the required runs. Dercksen mixed caution with calculated aggression, eventually scoring 45 off 45 balls, including two fours and two sixes, before she was caught by captain Nigar Sultana off Nahida Akter at 87/4 in 14.1 overs.

Even after Dercksen’s dismissal, South Africa remained composed. Marizanne Kapp added a useful 16 from 21 balls, sharing a 15-run fifth-wicket partnership with Nadine de Klerk, who contributed 15 off 14 deliveries. Kapp was run out at 102/5 in 17.3 overs, but the chase remained under control. De Klerk and Chloe Tryon then added another 11 runs before Ritu Moni dismissed De Klerk for 15, leaving South Africa at 113/6 in 18.5 overs. With only a handful of runs required, Chloe Tryon remained unbeaten on a brisk 8 off 5 balls, while Sinalo Jafta stayed unbeaten on 0, guiding South Africa to 118/6 in 19.2 overs, completing the chase with four balls remaining. The innings also included 10 extras, which proved valuable in such a closely contested match.

Bangladesh’s bowlers competed strongly and kept the contest alive until the closing stages. Nahida Akter led the attack with 2 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs, removing both Tazmin Brits and the dangerous Annerie Dercksen. Marufa Akter gave Bangladesh the perfect start with 1/23 in 3.2 overs, dismissing Laura Wolvaardt first ball. Sanjida Akter Meghla picked up the important wicket of Dane van Niekerk while finishing with 1/28 in 4 overs, and Ritu Moni claimed 1/24 in her 4 overs, dismissing Nadine de Klerk late in the chase. Rabeya Khan bowled economically, conceding only 17 runs in her 4 overs despite going wicketless, helping Bangladesh stretch the contest until the penultimate over.

Ultimately, South Africa Women’s superior bowling performance and calm approach during the chase proved decisive as they keep their semifinal hopes alive. Marizanne Kapp was deservedly named Player of the Match for her exceptional all-round contribution, taking 1/9 in four overs before scoring 16 runs, while Annerie Dercksen’s composed 45 anchored the successful chase. Despite brave efforts from Sobhana Mostary, Nigar Sultana, and Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling unit, South Africa Women completed the chase at 118/6 in 19.2 overs, sealing a hard-earned four-wicket victory.
