England Hand ODI Debuts to Dani Gibson, Jodi Grewcock and Tilly Corteen-Coleman in New Zealand Opener

England handed ODI debuts to Dani Gibson, Jodi Grewcock and Tilly Corteen-Coleman for the opening match of the three-match series against New Zealand at Chester-le-Street on Sunday, with the hosts unveiling a significantly refreshed side ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The series marks England Women’s return to competitive cricket after a gap of 193 days, dating back to last year’s 50-over World Cup final defeat against South Africa. With several senior players unavailable, selectors used the opening ODI to introduce new faces and further build squad depth before the home World Cup begins on June 12.

Among the three debutants, Dani Gibson arrived with the most international experience, having already represented England in 22 T20Is. However, the 23-year-old all-rounder received her maiden ODI cap after missing much of last season because of a back stress fracture.

Gibson’s return is viewed as a major boost for England’s white-ball setup given her growing reputation in domestic cricket and franchise tournaments. Known for her aggressive middle-order batting and seam bowling, she has become one of the most highly rated all-rounders in the English domestic system through strong performances in regional cricket and The Hundred. Earlier this year, Gibson also emerged as one of the headline names in the Women’s Hundred auction after becoming the highest-paid domestic player.

Jodi Grewcock also earned her first international cap after consistently impressing in domestic cricket over the past two seasons. The 21-year-old batting all-rounder has established herself as one of England’s promising young prospects through her performances with Northamptonshire, Sunrisers and Essex. Her rise through the pathway system has been closely followed for several years after she first gained attention as the youngest girl to score a half-century for Northamptonshire.

Teenage spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman completed England’s trio of debutants and continued her rapid rise through the national setup. The 18-year-old left-arm spinner has quickly emerged as one of England’s brightest young bowling prospects and was recently included in England’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Corteen-Coleman gained wider recognition during the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup earlier this year. One of her standout performances came against New Zealand in the semi-finals, where she claimed impressive figures of 4 for 8. Her inclusion in the ODI side was particularly notable given England selected her ahead of experienced left-arm spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Linsey Smith for the opening match.

England entered the series without several established players. Regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was ruled out because of a calf injury, leading off-spinner Charlie Dean to captain the side for the first time in ODIs. Alice Capsey missed out through illness, Sophia Dunkley was rested, while Danni Wyatt-Hodge remains unavailable ahead of the birth of her first child.

The absence of senior players has created opportunities for younger names to stake their claim ahead of the T20 World Cup, with England management clearly focused on expanding their depth before the global tournament on home soil.
