Women’s Super Smash: Day 3 – Caitlin Gurrey and Amelia Kerr power Northern Spirit and Wellington Blaze to victories
● Caitlin Gurrey hit an unbeaten century to give Northern Spirit victory over Central Hinds. Charlotte Sarsfield from Spirit also took 3 wickets.
● Suzie Bates’ 47 off 34 goes in vain as Auckland Hearts win against Otago Sparks.
● Amelia Kerr remained not out on 47 off 32 to help Wellington Blaze achieve victory while Canterbury Magicians’ Gabby Sullivan took a hat-trick to take the game to the last over.
Match 1: Northern Spirit v Central Hinds, Lincoln Green
Northern Spirit met Central Hinds at Lincoln Green on the first match of the third day. Hinds won the toss and chose to bat first. Opener Jess Watkin played a superb knock at the top. She remained not out on 95 which came in 55 balls. She hit 14 boundaries and 4 sixes during her stay in the middle. Natalie Dodd and Anlo van Deventer scored 20 and 35* runs respectively. Central Hinds made 172 runs losing 6 wickets in the first innings. Charlotte Sarsfield from Spirit took 3 wickets.
Northern Spirit completed the chase in 17.4 overs as both the openers remained unbeaten. Caitlin Gurrey hit the second ton of the tournament. Her 57-ball 106 consisted of 17 fours and 1 maximum. At the other end Bernadine Bezuidenhout hit 59 runs in 49 balls. Spirit won the match by 10 wickets.
Match 2: Otago Sparks vs Auckland Hearts, Bert Sutcliffe Oval
Suzie Bates’ 47 off 34 and Katey Martin’s 30 off 39 was not enough for the Sparks as Auckland Hearts won the match by 7 wickets. Batting first, Otago Sparks posed a total of 126 runs losing 6 wickets. A combined team effort from the Hearts saw them chasing the target in 16.4 overs. Saachi Shahri’s 40* off 27, Lauren Down’s 22 off 20 and Katie Perkins 28 off 29 set the tone of the chase.
Match 3: Canterbury Magicians vs Wellington Blaze, Hagley Oval
Wellington Blaze elected to bowl first and restricted Canterbury Magicians to 137/6 in 20 overs. Opener Kirsty Nation made 36 runs while Jacinta Savage remained not out on 40(24). Deanna Doughty from Blaze took 3 wickets.
In the second innings, Rachel Priest scored 39 off 32 while Amelia Kerr remained unbeaten on 47 off 32 to steer the chase. But Gabby Sullivan’s hat-trick in the middle ensured that the game continued till the last over. Wellington Blaze chased the target in 19.2 overs losing 6 wickets.
