India’s star all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who bagged the Player of the Tournament award in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 was honoured on November 14 at the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Gomti Nagar Extension, Lucknow.

The ceremony officially welcomed her into the force as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) under the sports quota, celebrating both her cricketing achievements and her entry into the public service department.
The event was attended by Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna along with senior officers of the UP Police. They applauded Deepti for bringing pride not just to the nation but also to her home state.
DGP Krishna spoke warmly about her contributions. He said, “Deepti Sharma has not only made the country proud but has also brought glory to Uttar Pradesh and the state police force. Her achievements inspire pride across the police fraternity.”
He also connected her success to larger milestones in Indian cricket, from the men’s iconic 1983 World Cup win to India women’s stunning triumph over seven-time champions Australia in the semi-final. According to him, moments like these are pushing young and talented girls across India to dream bigger.
During his address, the DGP appreciated the state government’s efforts under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to bring top athletes into the police force through the sports quota. He mentioned that several sportspersons have joined in recent years through this initiative.
Highlighting the qualities required to shine on the global stage, he added that discipline, hard work and strong willpower are the pillars of success – qualities Deepti has repeatedly displayed.
When Deepti spoke, she described her induction as a deeply meaningful achievement for her and her family. Becoming a part of the Uttar Pradesh Police was something her family had long dreamed of. She thanked the officials for recognising her after the World Cup win and said that wearing the police uniform for the first time was an unforgettable experience.
Deepti also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for policies that provide athletes with financial support and job opportunities. She specially mentioned the constant encouragement of her elder brother, Sumit Sharma, who has guided her throughout her cricket journey.
In a separate press briefing, Cabinet Minister Suresh Khanna revealed that the state Cabinet had officially passed resolutions congratulating the Indian women’s cricket team for winning their maiden World Cup title. He added that Deepti received special praise for her crucial performances during the campaign, reflecting the wide appreciation for her achievements.
