Laura Wolvaardt became the first South African to surpass 3,000 T20I runs after producing a sensational career-best performance against Zimbabwe in the third T20I at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, on 15 September 2026. The 27-year-old South African captain marked the landmark with an unbeaten 126 off 62 balls, helping her side post 200/1 and complete an emphatic 80-run victory.
Wolvaardt entered the contest needing 86 runs to reach the historic milestone. Opening the innings alongside Miane Smit, she attacked the Zimbabwean bowling from the outset and transformed the occasion into a memorable personal and team performance. Her unbeaten 126 featured 16 boundaries and four sixes, taking her T20I tally to 3,040 runs.
The knock was her highest score in T20I cricket for South Africa and also her fourth century in the format. That achievement moved her level with Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu for the joint-second-most T20I centuries. Only UAE skipper Esha Oza (5) has more in the format so far, underlining the consistency and impact Laura Wolvaardt has brought to South Africa’s white-ball campaign.
Her latest century also took her overall international hundred tally to 18 across formats, equalling the record held by India’s Smriti Mandhana. Wolvaardt’s achievement is particularly significant because it combines exceptional longevity with a high level of consistency across Test, ODI and T20I cricket.
A landmark built on consistency
Wolvaardt made her international debut in an ODI against England at Benoni on 7 February 2016 before making her T20I debut against Ireland in Dublin on 1 August 2016. Since then, she has become one of the defining batters in women’s cricket, accumulating 3,040 T20I runs at a strike rate of 123.12 and an average of 38.48.
Her T20I record includes 16 half-centuries and four centuries in 107 matches and 101 innings. Those figures reflect a batter capable of anchoring an innings while also accelerating decisively when the situation demands it. Against Zimbabwe, she displayed both qualities, combining classical strokeplay with powerful boundary hitting to finish with a strike rate of 203.23.
Wolvaardt has also made a strong contribution to the ongoing series. She is currently South Africa’s second-highest run-scorer and the second-highest run-scorer overall, with 142 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 179.74 and an average of 71. Her unbeaten century is the standout performance of her campaign so far.
The victory in Bulawayo gave South Africa an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, with two games still to be played. It is the first bilateral five-match T20I series between Zimbabwe and South Africa, running from 11 to 19 September 2026.
South Africa won the opening T20I by six wickets, followed it with a 64-run victory in the second match and then produced another dominant result in the third. Zimbabwe, led by stand-in captain Nomvelo Sibanda, have been unable to contain Wolvaardt’s side, who have combined powerful batting with disciplined all-round performances.
For her match-defining innings, Wolvaardt was named Player of the Match. More than an individual award, it was fitting recognition for a captain who reached a historic milestone while delivering the innings that set up South Africa’s biggest win of the series. The 4th T20I of the series will be played on 17th September 2026 at the same venue frm 4:30 PM IST.
