Natasha Codyre and All-Rounder Xara Jetly Lead in Wellington Blaze’s Clinical Win Over Northern Brave

The opening match of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield 2025-26, New Zealand Cricket Women’s One Day Competition, turned into a shortened 37-over contest after rain delays, but Wellington Women made sure the wait was worth it.

Taking on Northern Brave Women, they produced a clinical performance to begin their campaign with a comfortable win by 8 wickets.

Northern Brave had a day to forget with the bat. None of their top or middle-order batters could settle in, and only one player managed to cross the 20-run mark. Wicketkeeper Holly Topp showed some fight, top-scoring with a steady 32, but she found little support around her.

At one stage, the Brave were struggling at 76/6, with regular wickets falling. Wellington’s bowlers were outstanding, especially Natasha Codyre, who delivered a brilliant spell. The right-arm medium pacer picked up 4 wickets for just 28 runs in her 10 overs, keeping things tight throughout. Jessica Simmons also chipped in with 2 wickets in her 4.1 overs, helping bundle the Brave out cheaply.

Chasing a modest target, Wellington had a small hiccup early when opener Hannah Francis fell for a 5-ball duck. But captain Georgia Plimmer took charge and anchored the innings beautifully with a composed 48 off 69 balls.

She stitched together important partnerships, first with Xara Jetly, who added a valuable 38*, and then with Jess Kerr, who chipped in with 23*. With the help of 11 extras, Wellington cruised to 120/2, sealing a dominant win with plenty of overs to spare.

A strong start for Wellington Women, who showed discipline with the ball and maturity with the bat, setting the tone for their tournament ahead.
