Shawaal Zulfiqar has quickly established herself as one of the brightest prospects. A right-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler, Shawaal represents the new generation of fearless cricketers who are ready to take Pakistan women’s cricket to greater heights.
Shawaal’s journey to the international stage has been a story of rapid growth and early success. At just 17, she was part of Pakistan’s squad for the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in January 2023, where she showcased her potential on a global platform. Her performances at the youth level earned her quick recognition, and within months, she was making strides towards senior international cricket.
Shawaal’s rise accelerated in mid-2023. She was named in Pakistan’s squad for the 2022 Asia Games in Hangzhou and soon after, in August 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) awarded her a central contract, a remarkable achievement for such a young player.
Shawaal Zulfiqar’s International Career
That same month, she was called up for the T20I series against South Africa, making her WT20I debut on 1 September 2023. Just a week later, she donned the Pakistan jersey again to make her ODI debut on 8 September 2023 against the same opposition. For a teenager, this rapid transition from youth cricket to the highest level was both challenging and inspiring, reflecting not only her skills but also the faith Pakistan’s selectors have in her ability to develop into a long-term asset.
While still at the beginning of her international journey, Shawaal has gained valuable experience. In 4 ODIs, she has scored 15 runs, modest returns that do not reflect the full range of her batting ability. With a fluid technique and the ability to play both anchor and aggressive roles, she remains a work in progress, an exciting one at that.
