The Indian under-19 women’s team, led by skipper Niki Prasad, added another chapter to their history books as they successfully defended the inaugural title clinched by the Shafali Verma-led side in South Africa in 2023.

The 2nd edition was held in Malaysia, and the Niki Prasad-led Indian team clinched a consecutive 2nd title by defeating South Africa, led by skipper Kayla Reyneke, by 9 wickets in the final at the Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur on 2nd February 2025 (Sunday).
In the brief history of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, the Indian team bettered their legacy by staying unbeaten throughout this edition, after having lost a game to Australia in their inaugural campaign in 2023.
The triumphant squad led by Niki Prasad received a warm welcome in Hyderabad upon their return from Malaysia. The fans along with the media gathered in large numbers to get a glimpse of the champion side who made the whole country proud.
Gongadi Trisha, who was involved in her 2nd campaign at the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, delivered a blockbuster all-round show in the Final that secured India’s 2nd consecutive title triumph. Her bowling figures of 3 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs not only showcased her skills but also marked her best contribution with the ball in the tournament.
With the bat, Trisha remained unbeaten on 44 runs off 33 balls, guiding India across the finish line. For her extraordinary efforts, she was awarded both the Player of the Match and the Player of the Tournament accolades.
Trisha’s statistical returns portray a story of resilience and brilliance as she topped the run-scoring charts in the tournament with a staggering 309 runs at an impressive strike rate of 147.14, maintaining an average of 77.25 over seven innings.
Notably, she made headlines by becoming the first woman to hit a century in the tournament‘s history, smashing 110 runs off just 59 balls against Scotland, peppering the boundary with 13 fours and launching four sixes. This remarkable feat etched her name into the record books at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.
In conversation with the ANI, the BCCI’s strength and conditioning coach Mantravadi Shalini heaps praise on the dynamic all-rounder Gongadi Trisha saying “It’s not surprising. We always expected Trisha to do well. I have known her from a young age. This time it was special because she was the highest run-getter. We are very proud of her.”
Gongadi Trisha is one of those three players Shabnam Shakil and Sonam Yadav who were a part of India’s inaugural Under-19 World Cup triumph under the leadership of Shafali Verma in South Africa in 2023. In the post-match presentation after the conclusion of the grand finale, she also revealed that she started playing cricket because of her dad and that she idolises former legendary Indian skipper Mithali Raj.
If it was G Trisha’s show with the bat in the 2nd edition of the tournament for India, when it comes to the bowling front, it was the left-arm spin trio of Aayushi Shukla, Parunika Sisodia, and Vaishnavi Sharma in particular who were impeccable with the ball.
Vaishnavi Sharma, despite starting the recently concluded 2nd edition of the tournament on the bench, topped the wicket-taking charts and with her tally of 17 wickets at an average of 4.35 and an economy of 3.36 scripted the record for most wickets in a single edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, highlighting her effectiveness as a key bowler for India.
Vaishnavi also made history as the second bowler to claim a five-wicket haul and the first to achieve a hat trick in the 2nd edition of the tournament. Her contributions were instrumental during the knockout stages, solidifying India’s dominance in the competition held in Malaysia.
