It was in July 2007, that a young Ellyse Perry made her international debut for Australia against New Zealand in the ODI format. On ODI debut, she displayed her capabilities after claiming two wickets with the ball and scoring 19 runs. It was against the same opposition in March 2008, she scored her first fifty and was only 18 when she was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup squad in the 2009 World Cup, becoming the first woman to represent Australia in two World Cups in different sports.
It was during New Zealand’s tour to Australia in 2010 Perry scalped her maiden ODI five-wicket haul after finishing with figures of 5/31 with a match-winning spell. Perry’s career trajectory has been adorned with memorable performances as she played a crucial role in Australia’s fourth World Cup triumph in the 2013 Women’s World Cup held in India. She showcased her all-round brilliance scoring an unbeaten 25 and finished with excellent figures of 3/19 in the final against the Windies as Australia went on to win the final. As time passed, Perry established herself as one of the premiere all-rounders, seamlessly contributing both with bat and ball.
In the 2017 ODI World Cup, Perry was Australia’s leading run scorer and third overall with 404 runs in eight matches, including five fifties, while also impressing with the ball taking nine wickets. In the same year during the 2019 Women’s Ashes, she registered her career-best bowling figures of 7/22 against England.
The Australian all-rounder’s journey to her maiden ODI hundred (107*) was a patient one which came against New Zealand in 2019 – a side she had significant success. Notably, she notched up her highest ODI score in the same year, which came against the Windies, with an unbeaten 112.
In the ongoing series against India, Perry’s form has been remarkable. She smashed her third ODI century in the second ODI, reaching the milestone in 72 balls – the fastest by a player against Indian women.
With 150 ODI caps, over 4000 ODI runs, and 160 ODI wickets to her name, Perry’s legacy as one of the greatest all-rounders in women’s cricket grows stronger with each milestone.
