A huge dent in her route to making her way back into the Indian ODI set-up after a prolonged absence for the 28-year-old top-order batter Priya Punia as she suffered an injury on her left-knee in the 2nd ODI. Due to the injury, she didn’t step out to bat in the 2nd ODI of the series when India were chasing a mammoth total of 372.
Punia made her ODI debut on 9th October 2019 against South Africa at the Reliance Stadium, in Vadodara. She was impressive on her debut, scoring an unbeaten half-century (75* off 124 balls) and was also awarded the Player of the Match for her match-winning innings. She has scored 273 runs at a decent average of 27.30 in 11 innings with the bat for her side so far.
Before making a comeback into the ongoing three-match ODI series, she last played for India in the format on 19th July 2023 against Bangladesh in Mirpur. The fate of the series is already out of India’s hands, after conceding the series with a massive 122 runs margin. Punia wasn’t available for selection in the 3rd and final ODI of the series at the W.A.C.A, Perth.
The BCCI medical team is assessing her progress and hoping for a speedy recovery before their home series against the West Indies, including a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series from 15th December to 27th December 2024.
The BCCI on X posted, “Ms Priya Punia sustained an injury on her left knee in the 2nd ODI, at the Allan Border Field. She was not available for selection for the Third ODI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring her progress.”
