India registered a thumping win over Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test, beating them by 295 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. Following India’s resounding triumph over the hosts, many Female cricketers appreciated some individual brilliance and celebrated India’s victory on the social media platform ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter.
Having won the toss, India didn’t put up a competitive total as they were bowled out for 150. Australia was in a supreme position on day one having dismantled India’s top order though KL Rahul showed resilience with 26 before being dismissed through Mitchell Starc. It was Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy whose contribution put India to a 150-run mark. For Australia, it was Josh Hazlewood who scalped a four-fer. Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was on debut, was India’s top scorer with 41 runs.
Australia came out to bat on the opening day in the second innings and found themselves in trouble as they were folded for a score of 104 with the Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah claiming a fifer.
Jasprit Bumrah ran through the Australian lineup with India bouncing back and taking a crucial 46 run lead. After an ordinary display with the bat in the first innings, the Indian batting unit excelled in the second innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring his first century on Australian soil with 161 runs followed by Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 which helped the Indian team to put up a mountain of a total after declaring for 487/6.
Australia had a score of 534 runs to chase on a bouncy Perth wicket and the Indian bowlers were ruthless putting the Australians on the backfoot yet again as Jasprit Bumrah led the pack for Indian bowlers, supported by Mohammad Siraj, each claiming three wickets.
Travis Head put up a valiant fight with a score of 89 but ultimately fell against the Indian stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah. Australia was bowled out against for 238 with India winning the match by 295 runs and captain Bumrah claiming the player of the match.
Former India skipper of the women’s side Anjum Chopra applauded Jasprit Bumrah who was named as the stand-in skipper in the absence of India’s regular Test captain, Rohit Sharma. Anjum Chopra described him as a champion and a match winner who was leading the bowling unit and finished with figures of 5/30 in the first innings followed by a 3/42 in the second innings, playing a crucial role in India’s famous victory in the first Test.
Whereas former India pacer Jhulan Goswami also acknowledged India’s remarkable Test victory against the hosts. She celebrated India’s historic win and noted the teamwork India displayed to secure a victory and take a 1-0 lead. Jhulan Goswami also highlighted the resilience the Indian team showed against Australia at their home conditions making it a prouder chapter.
