The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the venues and fixtures for the upcoming sixth edition of the Women’s Twenty20 (T20) World Cup Qualifier. This tournament serves as the qualification event for the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for later this year.
In the 2023 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh from Group 1 and Ireland from Group 2 finished at the bottom of the table. However, Bangladesh qualified for the main event directly as hosts, while Sri Lanka, who finished 3rd in Group 1, and Ireland advanced to the 2024 global qualifier.
In the regional qualifications, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Asia, the Netherlands and Scotland from an extended Europe qualifier, and Uganda and Zimbabwe from the Africa qualifier earned their spots in the forthcoming global qualifier.
Vanuatu secured a spot in the global qualifier with 6 straight wins in the East Asia Pacific qualifier, while the United States of America (USA) topped the table in the Americas qualifier with 6 straight wins. In total, 8 teams from the 5 regional qualifiers joined Ireland and Sri Lanka in the 2024 global qualifier.
In the global qualifier, 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five each. Group A consists of Sri Lanka, Thailand, Scotland, Uganda, and the USA, while Group B features Ireland, Zimbabwe, Netherlands, UAE, and Vanuatu. Following a round-robin format where each team faces off against the others once, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The finalists will secure a spot in the main event, the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Set to be played at two venues in Abu Dhabi’s Tolerance Oval and Zayed Cricket Stadium, the tournament will showcase action-packed matches from April 25th to May 7th, 2024.
