Will Amol Muzumdar be the next coach of Indian Women’s Cricket team?

The Indian cricket community is buzzing with anticipation over the possible appointment of former Mumbai coach and domestic cricket stalwart Amol Muzumdar as the next head coach for the Indian women’s cricket team. Muzumdar is reportedly the front-runner for the position, which has been vacant since Ramesh Powar’s departure to the National Cricket Academy in December 2022.

The BCCI has laid out certain criteria for the appointment, including a minimum of 50 first-class games, international playing experience, or NCA Level ‘C’ certification. Muzumdar meets these requirements, having played cricket at the highest level and also coached at the NCA and with the South African team as a batting coach.

Muzumdar’s impressive first-class career record of 11,167 runs at an average of 48.13 is a testament to his cricketing acumen, and his coaching credentials make him an ideal candidate for the role. The BCCI is looking for a coach who can provide strategic direction to the team management and build a strong senior women’s national team. In addition, the coach is expected to monitor compliance with the fitness and high-performance standards established by the NCA.

However, the position of women’s team coach has been a contentious one in recent years, with three coaches removed due to differences with players. This includes the well-publicized conflict between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli in 2017, as well as the removal of Tushar Arothe and Powar (first stint) in 2018 due to disagreements with players. Despite these challenges, the BCCI remains committed to appointing a coach who can lead the women’s team to greater success and provide a positive environment for the players to thrive.

In the interim, former India cricketer Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been elevated to the position of batting coach for the senior women’s team, overseeing their operations until a new head coach is named. The appointment of the next head coach for the Indian women’s cricket team is eagerly awaited, and Muzumdar’s credentials make him a strong contender for the role.
