Rain plays spoilsport in Sydney derby, Thunder hold top sport on WBBL table

A fierce spell from Lucy Hamilton (4-1-8-5), earned her a well-deserved Player of the Match for the Brisbane Heat against the Melbourne Stars, as they climbed up to the 3rd spot in the points table, in match no. 30 of ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 10.

A high-octane clash between the Sixers and the Thunders in the Sydney Derby at the Drummoyne Oval in the 31st match of the tournament came to an abrupt end courtesy of persistent rains. The Sixers skipper Ellyse Perry opted to bat first after winning the toss and bowled the Thunder out for 121, with a ball to spare.

The 38-run opening stand between Georgia Voll and Chamari Athapaththu was the highest partnership of the innings for the Sydney Thunder. Georgia Voll (29 off 17 balls), skipper Phoebe Litchfield (28 off 25 balls), Georgia Adams (19 off 26 balls), and Sammy-Jo Johnson (14 off 16 balls) contributed with the bat to take Sydney Thunder to a modest total of 121.

Melie Kerr (4-0-16-3), Ashleigh Gardner (3.5-0-19-2), and Lauren Cheatle (4-0-28-2) were the stars of the Sixers bowling attack, while 15-year-old young sensation Caoimhe Bray also bagged a wicket, the prized one of Chamari Athapaththu.

The rains arrived after Sydney Sixers lost their skipper Ellyse Perry in the 2nd over of the run chase and the game was eventually called off as no further play was possible. Both teams shared a point each and the Sydney Thunder held their top spot on the WBBL table with 5 wins and only 2 losses from 8 games.
