Ellyse Perry’s 86 brings Sydney Sixers back to winning ways against a struggling Hurricanes

The Hobart Hurricanes led by skipper Elyse Villani were up against Sydney Sixers led by skipper Ellyse Perry at Bellerive Oval, Hobart in the 15th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 10.

Hobart Hurricanes won the toss and opted to field first. After being inserted to bat first, the Sydney Sixers got off to a poor start as they lost a couple of wickets in quick succession inside the first three overs of the innings.

Ashleigh Gardner joined skipper Ellyse Perry at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 37-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side past the 50-run mark. Nicola Carey picked up the wicket of Ashleigh Gardner to provide the 3rd breakthrough for the Hobart Hurricanes. Hollie Armitage joined skipper Ellyse Perry at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 61-run partnership for the 4th wicket to take their side past the 100-run mark.

Nicola Carey returned and cleaned up Hollie Armitage to provide the 4th breakthrough for her side. The Sydney Sixers eventually ended up with a total of 155/7 in their quota of 20 overs. Skipper Ellyse Perry (86 off 62 balls), Hollie Armitage (30 off 25 balls), and Ashleigh Gardner (21 off 16 balls) were the top performers with the bat for the Sydney Sixers. Chloe Tryon (4-0-30-2), Nicola Carey (3-0-27-2), Heather Graham (4-0-30-1), and Amy Smith (3-0-20-1) were the top performers with the ball for Hobart Hurricanes.

Chasing a target of 156, the Hobart Hurricanes got off to a poor start as they lost the wicket of their wicket-keeper batter Lizelle Lee in the 2nd ball of the run chase. Lauren Cheatle provided the first breakthrough for the Sydney Sixers. Nicola Carey joined Danielle Wyatt-Hodge at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 42-run partnership for the 2nd wicket to take their side close to the 50-run mark. Ashleigh Gardner picked up the wicket of Danielle Wyatt-Hodge to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side.

The Hurricanes lost a couple of wickets in quick succession to bring the Sydney Sixers firmly back into the contest. Chloe Tryon joined skipper Elyse Villani at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 30-run partnership for the 5th wicket to take their side closer to the 100-run mark. Lauren Cheatle returned and picked up the big wicket of the opposition skipper Elyse Villani to provide the 5th breakthrough for Sydney Sixers.

Hobart Hurricanes were eventually restricted to 149/9 in their quota of overs, as a result, falling 6 runs short of the target. Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (30 off 26 balls), skipper Elyse Villani (26 off 17 balls), Lauren Smith (21* off 13 balls), and Chloe Tryon (20 off 15 balls), were the top performers with the bat for Hobart Hurricanes. Sophie Ecclestone (4-0-22-2), Caoimhe Bray (3-0-13-2), and Courtney Grace Sippel (3-0-21-1) were the top performers with the ball for the Sydney Sixers.

Skipper Ellyse Perry was awarded the Player of the Match for her brilliant match-winning half-century (86 off 62 balls) with the bat.
