Fatima Khan’s all-round show and Haniah Ahmer’s 4-fer gives Pakistan U19 a consolation win over Samoa U19

We are through to the group stages of the ongoing 2nd edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup 2025, hosted by Malaysia from 18th January 2025 (Saturday). India, Sri Lanka, West Indies from Group A, England, USA, Ireland from Group B, South Africa, Nigeria, New Zealand from Group C, Australia, Bangladesh and Scotland from Group D have made their way into the Super Six stages of the tournament.

Pakistan was knocked out by Ireland, courtesy of a 13-run defeat, in their final league game. Samoa were knocked out by New Zealand, courtesy of their 67-run defeat in their final league game of the tournament.

Pakistan led by skipper Komal Khan were up against Samoa led by skipper Avetia Mapu in the 1st play-off game. The Pakistan openers Maham Anees and skipper Komal Khan got their side off to a positive start with a 17-run opening partnership after the Samoan skipper Avetia Mapu won the toss and inserted them to bat first. Norah Salima picked up the big wicket of the opposition skipper Komal Khan (11 off 8 balls) to provide the first breakthrough for Samoa in the 2nd over of the innings.

Pakistan went on to lose their vice-captain Zoofishan Ayyaz inside the powerplay to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Samoa. Minahil joined Maham Anees at the crease and shared a crucial 30-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side past the 50-run mark. Another run-out ended Minahil’s stay (17 off 17 balls), to provide the 3rd breakthrough for Samoa in the 10th over of the innings.

Pakistan ended up with a solid total of 136/8 in their quota of 20 overs, scoring 70 runs for the loss of five wickets at a rate of 7 runs an over in their final 10. The 31-run partnership for the 6th wicket between Tayyaba Imdad and Fatima Khan was the highest partnership of the innings for Pakistan. Maham Anees (28 off 42 balls), Fatima Khan (25 off 14 balls), and Quratulain Ahsen (13 off 11 balls) were the other star performers with the bat for Pakistan. Norah Salima (4-0-20-3), Katrina Samu (3-0-13-1), and Silepea Polataivao (3-0-13-1) were the top performers with the ball for Samoa

A much more impressive batting show from Samoa filled with positive intent saw them get closer to the 100-run mark as they ended up getting bundled out at 84 with just 7 balls to spare, almost surviving their full quota of 20 overs. It is also their highest total in the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup 2025, however, falling 52 runs short of the target. The 20-run 4th wicket partnership between Stella Sagalala (15 off 10 balls), and Verra Farane (19 off 18 balls) was the highest partnership of the run chase for Samoa.

Wicket-keeper batter Angel Sootaga (11 off 16 balls), and Stefania Pauga (10 off 21 balls) were the other batters who chipped in with crucial contributions with the bat for Samoa. Haniah Ahmer (4-0-17-4), Quratulain Ahsen (4-0-13-2), and Fatima Khan (3.5-0-19-2) were the top performers with the ball for Pakistan.

Haniah Ahmer was awarded the Player of the Match for her exceptional match-defining spell of 4-0-17-4, playing a crucial role in helping her side sign off their campaign in the ongoing 2nd edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup 2025 in Malaysia on a high with a comprehensive 52-run victory.
