“It Was Really Special,” Lucy Hamilton Relishes Dream Baggy Green Debut in Perth

Lucy Hamilton’s post-stumps Day 1 press conference after her baggy green debut in the pink-ball Test at W.A.C.A., Perth (March 6-9, 2026), captured the raw thrill of a young fast bowler’s immediate impact. The 11-3-31-3 spell that dismantled India for 198, starting with Smriti Mandhana’s prized scalp, propelled Australia to a commanding position in Alyssa Healy’s swansong series.

With India reeling at 105/6 on Day 2, trailing by 20 after Australia’s 323, Hamilton’s poise amid the multi-format saga (Australia leads 8-4, Test worth four points) underscores her arrival as a potential generational talent.

Australia’s seam attack ruled Day 1, bundling India out in 62.4 overs after Healy won the toss and bowled. Jemimah Rodrigues top-scored with 52 (84), backed by Shafali Verma (35 off 48), debutant Kashvee Gautam (34* off 54), and Harmanpreet Kaur (19 off 15). Annabel Sutherland’s 17-5-46-4 career-best, Darcie Brown’s 12.4-0-41-2, and Hamilton’s electric burst earned Australia the edge in the pink-ball Test. Australia closed at 96/3 (27 overs), trailing by 102, with Ellyse Perry (43* off 62) and Sutherland (20* off 29) unbeaten in a 38-run stand. India’s debutants shone: Sayali Satghare (8-1-24-2), Kranti Gaud (11-2-28-1).

Hamilton, Australia’s lone debutant alongside India’s quartet (Pratika Rawal, Gautam, Satghare, Gaud), lit up the conference with infectious energy. “It was really exciting. I got the call-up two days ago. Just seeing the support of them and Beth Mooney giving me my hat, it was really special,” she beamed on her first Test day. The baggy green moment? “Very high, very exciting. Getting a really nice speech from Beth Mooney and getting to put my baggy on for the first time was really special.”

Her first wicket, Mandhana, set the tone after a wicketless ODI debut “Obviously, Smiti Mandhana is a really high-quality player. It was nice to get my first wicket, so it was nice to get that and the monkey off the back. Then it just kept rolling on from there.” WPL exposure and a recent ODI debut eased her nerves into the longer format.

“Yeah, definitely. I think getting the opportunity to know what you’re stepping into, playing in the WPL, helped me know the opposition more.” Heat tested all, but Bundaberg roots helped: “Yeah, it was hard. Growing up in a place like Bundaberg, it gets pretty hot down there too, so the breeze was actually pretty lovely.” Three wickets thrilled her: “Really special, to do my job and come on for a second spell and impact the game, which was really nice and what a fast bowler always wants to do.”

Joining a star-studded side for Healy’s 299th and final international, Hamilton felt instant belonging. “Yeah, so welcoming, the team’s so supportive. I think that’s why I’m a lot less nervous.” Bowling with Brown, Sutherland, and Tahlia McGrath? “When Darcie Brown’s at the other end, storming in, it’s always nice, using the bounce of the W.A.C.A.” Sutherland’s four-fer, despite four dropped catches, drew praise: “She’s definitely the high-performance athlete that everyone dreams to be, a real testament to her.”

Perry (76 off 116) and Sutherland’s historic 129 (171, 17 fours), her third straight Test ton, first in women’s cricket, forged the second-highest 4th-wicket stand (128 off 169) in pink-ball Tests. Australia folded at 323 (90.4 overs), leading by 125. Hamilton’s 23 (54) at No. 10 added grit; Perry crossed 1,000 Test runs, second Australian after Karen Rolton, also becoming the leading run-scorer for her side in the Test format.

India’s second dig crumbled to 105/6 (29 overs), Hamilton striking again with 8-1-32-3 alongside Sutherland (6-2-15-2) and Brown (9-1-37-1). In Healy’s emotional send-off, the teen quick’s debut echoes Australia’s seam legacy. The home side seems well poised to clinch the Pink test at the W.A.C.A., Perth.
