Nigar Sultana Joty has become one of the defining figures in the rise of Bangladesh women’s cricket, combining calm leadership, reliable middle-order batting, and sharp wicketkeeping skills. Born in Rajshahi, she emerged through Bangladesh’s domestic system at a time when opportunities in women’s cricket were still limited, eventually growing into one of the team’s most dependable performers across formats.

A technically sound right-handed batter, Nigar built her reputation through composure under pressure and the ability to stabilise innings while also accelerating when required. Though naturally an attacking player, she has often adapted her game to suit Bangladesh’s needs, balancing responsibility with aggression in the middle order. Behind the stumps, her consistency and safe hands made her a long-term fixture in the side.

Nigar Sultana Joty’s International Career

Nigar made her international debut against Pakistan in 2015 as an 18-year-old and quickly established herself as Bangladesh’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter. Over time, she developed into a leader within the squad and was appointed captain across formats in 2021.

Under her leadership, Bangladesh have produced several landmark performances on the global stage, including their historic appearance at the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup and strong showings in ICC tournaments against higher-ranked opposition. Her captaincy has helped Bangladesh evolve from underdogs into a far more competitive international side capable of challenging established teams.

In T20Is, Nigar has played 119 matches and scored 2336 runs at an average of 26.54 and a strike rate of 91.14, including one century and 11 half-centuries. She became the first Bangladesh woman cricketer to cross 2000 T20I runs and the first to play 100 T20Is. Behind the stumps, she has contributed 26 catches and 47 stumpings.

For Bangladesh, Nigar provides stability, tactical clarity, and the experience of having led the team through multiple ICC tournaments — qualities that could prove invaluable as they look to challenge stronger sides on the world stage. Her experience, leadership, and ability to manage difficult situations with the bat will be crucial in English conditions, where batting can often demand patience and game awareness. As a wicketkeeper, her clean glovework against both seam and spin will also carry added importance on pitches expected to offer movement and variable bounce.
