Nahida Akter has emerged as one of the most important figures in Bangladesh women’s cricket, establishing herself as the team’s lead spinner through accuracy, control, and remarkable consistency in white-ball cricket. Hailing from Dhaka, Nahida’s journey began after watching Bangladesh men’s matches on television with her brother, which inspired her to pursue cricket seriously despite limited opportunities and social resistance.

She joined the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) in 2013, where coaches identified her potential as a left-arm spinner and helped shape her bowling action and tactical understanding. Although she initially enjoyed batting more, her natural control and ability to bowl tight lines quickly made her one of Bangladesh’s brightest spin prospects.

Nahida broke into the national setup at a very young age and became Bangladesh’s youngest ODI debutant at just 14 years and 336 days. Over time, she evolved into the leader of Bangladesh’s spin attack, drawing inspiration from bowlers such as Shakib Al Hasan and Rangana Herath while developing her own style based around discipline, subtle variations, and smart game awareness.

Nahida Akter’s International Career

Nahida has been one of Bangladesh’s most reliable performers in T20 cricket, particularly through her ability to control the middle overs and consistently take wickets. In T20Is, she has played 101 matches and claimed 117 wickets at an outstanding average of 17.11 and an economy rate of 5.81, including career-best figures of 5 for 8.

Nahida’s influence extends beyond statistics. She has become one of the faces of Bangladesh women’s cricket after overcoming criticism and societal barriers during her early years. Her calmness under pressure and tactical maturity have made her a senior figure within the squad, while her experience across more than 150 international matches has helped guide Bangladesh’s younger bowlers.

Nahida will be central to Bangladesh’s hopes during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England. English conditions, particularly on used surfaces later in the tournament, could suit her style of bowling, where drift, accuracy, and subtle changes in pace become increasingly valuable. Against aggressive batting line-ups, her ability to slow the scoring rate and create pressure through dot balls could play a major role for Bangladesh.
