A Brief History of The Hundred Women’s Competition: 2021-2023

With the 2024 women’s edition of The Hundred upon us, let’s take a look at the previous three seasons in a nutshell. Running from July 23 to August 18, 2024, the fourth season features eight men’s and women’s teams from major cities across England and Wales.

The Hundred is a 100-ball cricket tournament organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), with its inaugural season in 2021. The format includes group-stage matches followed by knockouts.

The eight teams in The Hundred are Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles, Trent Rockets, Southern Brave, and Welsh Fire.

Let’s have a look below at the previous three seasons of The Hundred Women’s Competition:

2021

The inaugural season was delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the inaugural edition, Southern Brave finished at the top of the group standings, losing only one match out of eight, with 14 points. Oval Invincibles were second with 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 no result, totaling 9 points. Birmingham Phoenix were third with an equal number of wins and losses, accumulating 8 points. The remaining teams were ranked as follows: London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Trent Rockets, and Welsh Fire.

Southern Brave advanced directly to the final, while Oval Invincibles and Birmingham Phoenix faced off in the Eliminator. Oval Invincibles won by 20 runs, with Tash Farrant named Player of the Match for her 4/10.

In the final, Oval Invincibles triumphed over Southern Brave by 48 runs, with Marizanne Kapp named Player of the Match for her 26 (14) & 4/9. Champions Oval Invincibles dominated individual statistics, with Dane van Niekerk being the top-scorer with 259 runs in 9 innings and Tash Farrant being the top wicket-taker claiming 18 wickets.

2022

Oval Invincibles topped the group standings in 2022, losing only one match out of six, with 10 points and a net run rate (NRR) of 1.098. Southern Brave, with the same win-loss record, were second due to a lower NRR of 0.806. Trent Rockets were third with an equal number of wins and losses, totaling 6 points. The remaining teams were ranked as follows: Birmingham Phoenix, Northern Superchargers, Manchester Originals, London Spirit, and Welsh Fire.

Oval Invincibles advanced directly to the final, while Southern Brave and Trent Rockets played the Eliminator. Southern Brave won by a narrow margin of 2 runs, with Tahlia McGrath named Player of the Match for her 31 (29), 2/36, and 2 catches.

In the final, Oval Invincibles won by 5 wickets, securing back-to-back championships, with Southern Brave again finishing as runners-up. Marizanne Kapp was named Player of the Match for her 37* (33) & 1/19. Laura Wolvaardt (Northern Superchargers) was the top-scorer with 286 runs in 6 innings, while Amanda-Jade Wellington (Southern Brave) was the top wicket-taker with 17 wickets.

2023

Southern Brave topped the group standings in 2023, losing only one match out of eight, with 14 points. Northern Superchargers were second with 6 wins and 2 losses, totaling 12 points, while Welsh Fire were third with 5 wins, 2 losses, and 1 no result, accumulating 11 points. The remaining teams ranked as follows: Trent Rockets, Oval Invincibles, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, and Birmingham Phoenix.

Southern Brave advanced directly to the final, while Northern Superchargers and Welsh Fire played the Eliminator. The match was declared a no-result due to rain, and Northern Superchargers advanced to the final due to their better group stage position.

In the final, Southern Brave won by 34 runs, securing their first championship after being runners-up for the previous two seasons. Danni Wyatt was named Player of the Match for her 59 (38). Both the top-scorer and top wicket-taker in 2023 were from Southern Brave, with Danni Wyatt accumulating 295 runs in 9 innings and Georgia Adams claiming 16 wickets.
