Maia Bouchier’s 136 and Ella McCaughan’s 104 Powers Hampshire to 10-Wicket Win

Hampshire Women delivered one of the most dominant performances of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026 season, producing a flawless run chase to secure a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Essex Women at the County Ground, Chelmsford. After a disciplined bowling display restricted Essex despite several useful contributions throughout their innings, Hampshire’s opening pair of Ella McCaughan and Maia Bouchier put on an exhibition of controlled and aggressive batting, sharing an unbroken double-century stand that left the home side with no route back into the contest.

The match began with Hampshire Women winning the toss and opting to field first, a decision that paid dividends despite Essex making a relatively steady start. Openers Grace Scrivens and Jodi Grewcock looked to settle the innings and added 33 runs for the first wicket. The partnership provided a solid platform before Naomi Dattani made the breakthrough, removing Grewcock for 17 from 19 deliveries, including four boundaries. The wicket brought Ariana Dowse to the crease, but Hampshire continued to apply pressure through disciplined lines and lengths.

Scrivens and Dowse attempted to rebuild and added 19 runs for the second wicket before Grace Scrivens was dismissed for 22 from 45 balls. Her innings included two boundaries and helped Essex reach 52/2. The hosts then suffered another setback almost immediately when Anneke Bosch was trapped leg-before by Bex Tyson without troubling the scorers, leaving Essex at 53/3. At that stage, Hampshire appeared firmly in control, but Florence Miller and Ariana Dowse responded with a valuable counterattack.

The fourth-wicket partnership between Dowse and Miller yielded 20 runs before Miller departed for 13 from 19 deliveries, dismissed by Amanda-Jade Wellington. Essex moved to 73/4 and needed a substantial partnership to regain momentum. That responsibility fell on Dowse and Joanne Gardner, who combined for the most significant stand of the innings. The pair added 43 runs for the fifth wicket, steadily rebuilding the innings and taking Essex past the halfway stage. Dowse contributed a patient 11 from 28 balls before becoming Bex Tyson’s third victim, leaving the score at 80/5.

With wickets continuing to fall at regular intervals, Joanne Gardner emerged as Essex’s anchor. She played a measured knock of 56 from 75 deliveries, striking seven boundaries and ensuring her side maintained a competitive scoring rate. Gardner found an able partner in Sophia Smale, and together they stitched a productive 36-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Smale added 18 from 23 balls before Georgia Adams broke the stand at 116/6. Gardner continued to marshal the lower order and then shared the most important partnership of the innings with Liberty Heap.

Heap played one of the standout knocks of the day, producing a fluent 75 from just 63 deliveries. Her innings featured eight boundaries and three sixes, injecting much-needed momentum into the Essex innings. Alongside Gardner, she added a crucial 84 runs for the seventh wicket, lifting Essex from a vulnerable position into a far stronger one. When Gardner eventually fell at 200/7 after an excellent innings, Essex had built a platform for a late flourish. Heap continued her aggressive approach but was dismissed for 75 at 234/8. Kate Coppack chipped in with 8, while Eva Gray remained unbeaten on 4 and Esmae MacGregor made 4 as Essex closed on 245 in 49 overs.

Hampshire’s bowlers shared the workload effectively throughout the innings. Bex Tyson was the standout performer, claiming 3 for 66 from her 10 overs and removing Ariana Dowse, Anneke Bosch, and Jodi Grewcock. Amanda-Jade Wellington delivered an economical spell of 10 overs, taking 2 for 39 and accounting for Florence Miller and Joanne Gardner. Georgia Adams picked up 1 for 27 from 4.1 overs, including the wickets of Sophia Smale and Esmae MacGregor. Naomi Dattani struck early to remove Grewcock, while Hannah Hardwick (2) claimed the key wicket of Liberty Heap. Poppy Tulloch bowled an energetic spell despite going wicketless.

A target of 246 appeared competitive, particularly given the nature of the surface, but Hampshire’s opening pair had completely different ideas. Ella McCaughan and Maia Bouchier produced a batting performance of the highest quality, combining caution with calculated aggression as they steadily dismantled the Essex bowling attack. The duo began confidently, rotating strike efficiently while punishing loose deliveries. As the innings progressed, both batters settled into a rhythm that Essex simply could not disrupt.

The first fifty partnership arrived comfortably, and the pair continued to accelerate without taking unnecessary risks. Their century stand effectively put Hampshire in command, while Essex searched desperately for a breakthrough. Every bowling change failed to produce a wicket as McCaughan and Bouchier maintained complete control. The partnership grew beyond 150 runs and then past 200, extinguishing any lingering hopes Essex may have harboured.

McCaughan played the perfect supporting-yet-commanding role, finishing unbeaten on 104 from 116 deliveries. Her innings featured 13 boundaries and showcased remarkable patience and shot selection. At the other end, Maia Bouchier was equally magnificent, remaining unbeaten on 136 from 114 balls. Bouchier struck 18 fours and two sixes in a commanding display of strokeplay that highlighted her class and confidence. Together, the pair added an unbroken 246-run opening partnership, guiding Hampshire to 246 without loss in just 38.2 overs and sealing victory with 70 balls remaining.

Essex’s bowlers endured a difficult afternoon against two set batters. Esmae MacGregor bowled seven overs for 51 runs, while Eva Gray returned figures of 0 for 41 from 5.2 overs. Sophia Smale conceded 42 from seven overs, and Jodi Grewcock gave away 35 runs in six overs. Captain Grace Scrivens and Anneke Bosch also tried to break the partnership but were unable to find success, while Kate Coppack finished with 0 for 27 from five overs.
