Anika Learoyd Hit 70, Olivia Barnes Takes Four as Somerset Women Dominate Warwickshire

Somerset Women produced a dominant all-round display to secure a convincing seven-wicket victory over Warwickshire Women in the 43rd match of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup at Exmouth. Chasing a target of 161, Somerset made light work of the pursuit, reaching 161/3 in just 21.4 overs and finishing the contest with a massive 170 balls to spare. The result was built on disciplined bowling, sharp fielding, and a commanding batting performance led by Anika Learoyd and Jess Hazell.

After winning the toss and electing to field first, Somerset Women immediately justified their decision with early breakthroughs. Warwickshire opener Georgia Redmayne looked positive at the start, striking six boundaries in her brisk 32 from 32 deliveries. Alongside Amu Surenkumar, she added 65 runs for the opening wicket, giving Warwickshire a promising platform. However, Olivia Barnes provided the crucial breakthrough when she dismissed Redmayne at 65/1 in the 9.1st over. The wicket shifted momentum firmly towards Somerset.

Despite losing her opening partner, Surenkumar continued to anchor the innings and was the standout batter for Warwickshire. The right-hander compiled a patient 58 from 72 balls, including nine boundaries. She shared a 47-run partnership with Meg Austin for the second wicket, taking the score to 112 before Austin was trapped lbw by Niamh Holland for 17. Katie George then joined Surenkumar and attempted to rebuild, with the pair adding another 39 runs for the third wicket. George contributed a useful 31 from 33 deliveries, striking four boundaries.

Just when Warwickshire appeared capable of pushing beyond 200, Somerset’s bowlers tightened their grip. Surenkumar’s dismissal at 151/3 in the 26.2nd over triggered a dramatic collapse. Olivia Barnes once again struck at a crucial moment, removing the set batter and finishing as the standout bowler with impressive figures of 4 for 24 from 8.3 overs.

Chasing wickets relentlessly, Somerset dismantled the middle and lower order. Charis Pavely was dismissed for a duck, Abigail Freeborn managed only 2, while Mary Taylor, Georgia Davis, Alexa Stonehouse, and Hannah Baker all failed to make significant contributions. From 151/3, Warwickshire slipped to 160 all out in just 33.3 overs, losing their final seven wickets for only nine runs.

Somerset’s bowling attack delivered a collective effort. Barnes’ four-wicket haul was well supported by Lola Harris, who claimed 4 for 32 from nine overs. Alex Griffiths and Chloe Skelton chipped in with a wicket each while maintaining economical spells, both conceding only 21 runs from four overs. Niamh Holland also claimed a wicket and applied pressure through the middle overs. Ellie Anderson went wicketless but bowled with discipline, contributing to the sustained pressure that forced Warwickshire’s collapse.

In reply, Somerset suffered an early setback when Rebecca Odgers was run out for a quickfire 6 at 18/1 in the third over. However, captain Sophie Luff ensured there was no panic. Luff played an aggressive hand, striking 34 from 32 balls with six boundaries. She combined with Anika Learoyd for a fluent 39-run second-wicket partnership that pushed Somerset ahead of the required rate. After Luff departed at 57/2, Learoyd continued to dominate proceedings.

Learoyd produced the innings of the match, remaining unbeaten on 70 from just 58 balls. Her knock featured eight fours and two sixes and showcased a perfect blend of timing and controlled aggression. She first added 29 runs with Niamh Holland for the third wicket before Holland departed for 13. From there, Learoyd found an ideal partner in Jess Hazell. The duo stitched together an unbroken 75-run fourth-wicket partnership that completely took the game away from Warwickshire. Hazell played a superb supporting role, finishing unbeaten on 32 from 25 deliveries with five boundaries as Somerset cruised to victory.

Warwickshire’s bowlers struggled to contain Somerset’s aggressive batting approach. Alexa Stonehouse was the lone wicket-taker with figures of 1 for 31 from six overs, while Phoebe Brett, Georgia Davis, Hannah Baker, Charis Pavely, and Mary Taylor all searched for breakthroughs without much success. The fielding effort produced a run-out and a catch, but the modest target never allowed Warwickshire to build sustained pressure.
