Skipper Hayley Matthews powered her side over the line by notching up her 8th ODI century to go 1-0 up in the 3-match series. She was also awarded the Player of the Match for her sensational all-round show (104* off 93 balls, 2/41 off 10 overs). For the 2nd ODI Both sides retained the same 11 that took the field in their previous game in the series opener.

Nigar Sultana Joty notches up 5th ODI fifty before Bangladesh fold for 184

West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews won the toss and opted to field first in the 2nd ODI at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts. The Bangladeshi openers Murshida Khatun and Fargana Hoque got their side off to a cautious start with a 34-run opening partnership. Aaliyah Alleyne picked up the wicket of Murshida Khatun to provide the first breakthrough for the West Indies in the 10th over of the innings.

The visitors lost a couple of wickets in quick succession to bring the home side firmly back into the contest. Sobhana Mostary joined skipper Nigar Sultana Joty at the crease when their side was in trouble at 56/3 in the 17th over of the innings. The pair formed a much-needed 51-run partnership for the 4th wicket to take their side past the 100-run mark. Karishma Ramharack picked up the wicket of Sobhana Mostary (23 off 32 balls) to provide the 2nd breakthrough for the home side.

Another collapse saw Bangladesh lose their last six wickets for just 77 runs, as a result, they were wrapped up for 184 with seven balls to spare. Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty notched up her 5th half-century (68 off 120 balls) in the format and was the top-scorer with the bat for her side. Shorna Akter (21 off 29 balls), and Fargana Hoque (18 off 35 balls) chipped in with crucial contributions with the bat, taking their side closer to the 200-run mark.

Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty made a good contribution as she accounted for around 37% of her side’s total. Deandra Dottin (6-1-8-1) was exceptional with the ball, alongside Karishma Ramharack (10-0-33-4), Aaliyah Alleyne (5.5-0-24-3), and Afy Fletcher (10-1-36-1), who were all impressive with the ball from the other end for the West Indies.

Chasing a target of 185, the West Indies batters crumbled like a pack of nine pins and got bundled out for 124, with 15 overs to spare, falling 60 runs short of the target. The 28-run partnership for the 2nd wicket between wicket-keeper batter Shemaine Campbelle (28 off 43 balls) and skipper Hayley Matthews (16 off 23 balls) was the highest partnership of the run chase.

Cherry-Ann Fraser (18 off 31 balls), and Karishma Ramharack (13 off 20 balls) chipped in with their contributions with the bat for West Indies. Nahida Akter (10-0-31-3), Rabeya Khan (8-0-19-2), Fahima Khatun (5-0-17-2), and Marufa Akter (8-0-35-2) were impressive with the ball for Bangladesh.

Nahida Akter was awarded the Player of the Match for her brilliant spell of 10-0-31-3, playing a crucial role in helping her side level the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, and keeping their hopes alive for a direct qualification to the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.

In the final game of the 2022/23-25 ICC Championship, the 3rd ODI of this series will decide the 6th and final qualification spot. Currently, Bangladesh and New Zealand are tied at 21 points, meaning a win or even a washout in the third ODI will secure the spot for Bangladesh. Otherwise, they will have to compete in the Qualifier.
