Hayley Matthews’ century powers West Indies to an ODI series lead over Bangladesh

The West Indies women’s team, led by skipper Hayley Matthews, is hosting Bangladesh, led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, for a historic white-ball bilateral series from 19th January to 1st February 2025. It is the first time these two sides will be up against each other in a bilateral series. The series includes a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series, at Warner Park, Basseterre.

Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne restrict Bangladesh under 200

The Bangladesh openers Murshida Khatun and Fargana Hoque got their side off to a cautious start with a 25-run opening partnership after Windies skipper Hayley Matthews won the toss and opted to field first in the 1st ODI. Deandra Dottin picked up the wicket of Fargana Hoque to provide the first breakthrough for the home side.

Sharmin Akter joined Murshida Khatun at the crease and the duo took their side past the 50-run mark with a crucial 44-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. Matthews picked up the wicket of Murshida Khatun (40 off 53 balls) to provide the 2nd breakthrough for her side. Joty joined Sharmin Akter at the crease and the duo stitched another crucial 46-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side past the 100-run mark.

Afy Fletcher cleaned up the opposition skipper to provide the big breakthrough for the West Indies. Sharmin (42 off 70 balls) soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 4th breakthrough for the home side. Shorna Akter joined Sobhana Mostary at the crease and the pair took their side closer to the 200-run mark with a vital 54-run partnership for the 5th wicket. Deandra Dottin returned and picked up the wicket of Shorna Akter (29 off 38 balls) to provide the 5th breakthrough for the West Indies.

Bangladesh were restricted to 198/9 in their quota of 50 overs. Sobhana Mostary (35 off 50 balls) also chipped in with a handy contribution with the bat for her side. Most of the Bangladeshi batters got starts but unfortunately for them, none of them went on to convert those starts into a big knock for the visitors.

Dottin (10-0-40-3), Matthews (10-0-41-2), Fletcher (10-1-32-1), and Aaliyah Alleyne (5-0-22-2) were impressive with the ball for the West Indies.

Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph make light work of the run chance

The West Indian openers Qiana Joseph and skipper Hayley Matthews got their side almost on the brink of a massive victory, chasing a target of 199. The pair put on a huge 163-run opening stand, scoring at the rate of over 6 runs an over. Rabeya Khan picked up the wicket of Qiana Joseph (70 off 79 balls) to provide the much-needed first breakthrough for Bangladesh.

The home side eventually got over the line with 9 wickets in hand and 110 balls to spare. Matthews stayed unbeaten on 104 off 93 balls to guide her side over the line. It was her 8th ODI century, the most by a West Indian batter, surpassing Stafanie Taylor (7) in the format. Rabeya Khan (7.4-0-38-1) was the only wicket-taker with the ball for the visitors, while Marufa Akter (6-1-20-0), and Nahida Akter (7-0-42-0) were impressive with the ball for her side.

The West Indian skipper Hayley Matthews was awarded the Player of the Match for her sensational all-round show in the 1st ODI. She returned with bowling figures of 10-0-41-2 and scored a sensational unbeaten century, 104* off 93 balls, to help her side gain the ODI series lead over the visitors, Bangladesh.
