“The girls are really hungry, inspiring each other, and inspire themselves,” says Delhi Capitals head coach Jonathan Batty

The Delhi Capitals led by skipper Meg Lanning have consistently been a force to reckon with in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) finishing on top of the points table with 12 points each including, just a couple of defeats in both editions of the tournament, since its inception in the year 2023.

They have also suffered multiple heartbreaks, finding it difficult to get past the final hurdle and as a result, finishing as the runners-up of the tournament on both occasions against the inaugural champions Mumbai Indians (MI) led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and against the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the previous edition of the tournament in 2024.

Skipper Meg Lanning has led from the front for her side scoring 708 runs so far across the seasons at a strike rate of 127.56 and an exceptional average of 39.33 in 20 innings with the bat for her side. Her tally of runs in the tournament includes six half-centuries so far for her franchise. As far as the bowling is concerned, Shikha Pandey is currently the leading wicket-taker for the Capitals with 21 wickets at an average of 22.33 and an economy of 6.70 in 19 innings with the ball for her side.

The Capitals again got off to another promising start in the 3rd edition of the tournament with an edge-of-the-seat last-ball thriller by 2 wickets against the Mumbai Indians in the 2nd game of the tournament at the Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara.

As they navigate the challenges of the ongoing third edition, head coach Jonathan Batty’s insights provide a fascinating glimpse into his strategy and the team’s mindset. Batty’s approach, as revealed in his recent statements, is a blend of relentless pursuit of excellence and strategic squad management.

Batty’s primary focus is on continuous improvement. “I’m still trying to raise their ceiling, raise their bar the whole time, by just obviously testing what they can go to,” he stated, encapsulating his philosophy of constantly pushing the players beyond their perceived limits.

He aims to unlock their full potential by creating an environment where they are challenged daily. This approach, while demanding, fosters growth and resilience within the squad. He also indicated a dynamic and reciprocal relationship between the coach and his players, suggesting open communication and mutual respect.

Batty is keen on replicating that winning formula while acknowledging the need for strategic enhancements. He noted, “We’ve played some really amazing cricket in the past two years, and we finished top of the table in both seasons one and two which proves we have played some really really good cricket. So, we’re trying to sort of repeat that and with a very similar formula to what we’ve had there.”

A key component of Batty’s strategy is the emphasis on all-rounders. Batty believes that players who can contribute with both bat and ball provide greater flexibility and balance to the team. The ability to play “six or seven bowlers” offers tactical advantages, allowing for adaptability based on match conditions and opponent strategies.

Furthermore, Batty emphasizes the team’s hunger and mutual inspiration. “But I think the girls are really hungry, inspiring each other, and inspire themselves,” he said. This speaks volumes about the team’s atmosphere and their collective drive to succeed. A motivated and supportive environment can often be the difference between a good team and a great one.
