“It’s been a brilliant few days. Initially having a lot of the Indian domestic players, we as a coaching team have been able to dedicate a lot of time to them. A lot of our focus in training has also been around match scenarios, so we have put them in a number of scenarios that we feel they will be put in during the WPL. Hopefully, that has given them a real insight into where they are at the moment,” she explains.

Under her guidance, the squad has been immersed in match-like scenarios, a strategy to sharpen their tactical awareness and decision-making under pressure. Beyond strategy, coach Edwards also highlights a cultural shift towards more fearless cricket.

“Every player that comes into MI hopefully knows what’s expected of them. But equally [important is] that aggressive approach which is what we want to have throughout when we bat, bowl or field – and that’s something we tried to put across most of the players”, she highlighted during a press conference.

Her vision is to foster a bold style of play that complements every individual’s strength. With their aggressive and fearless style garnering attention during the previous seasons, Edwards also spoke about establishing a distinct identity for the team.

“The first year was an amazing experience to win the WPL. We played some fantastic cricket last year as well, which is all we can ask for. We spoke in the team that we want people to want to turn on their TV and watch Mumbai Indians,” she shares.

With the team’s season opener set for February 15th, they hope to replicate their title-winning 2023 campaign and start the upcoming season with a bang. The challenge, however, would be to create and carry the momentum forward and re-establish themselves as the team to beat in the Women’s Premier League.
