In an exciting clash in WPL between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals, Banglore’s skipper Smriti Mandhana chose to field after winning the toss. Due to Ellyse Perry’s illness, Banglore included Nadine de Klerk in their playing XI, and Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, introduced Jess Jonassen for Annabel Sutherland.

Delhi Capitals had a steady start until Sophie Devine dismissed the Delhi skipper, Meg Lanning. Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey built a crucial 82-run partnership before Banglore’s Shreyanka Patil dismissed Shafali. Despite wickets falling at intervals, Delhi Capitals posted a formidable 194 runs for 5 wickets.

Royal Challengers Bangalore began their chase strongly but lost momentum after Sophie Devine’s dismissal. Smriti Mandhana and Sabbhineni Meghana’s partnership kept Banglore in a solid position until Marizanne Kapp’s pivotal wicket of the Banglore skipper turned the tide. The team collapsed to pressure, falling short by 25 runs, ending at 169 for 9.

Smriti’s undisputed knock

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s skipper Smriti Mandhana showcased her batting prowess by smashing 74 runs off 43 balls, which included 10 boundaries and three maximums. Despite her stellar performance, Bangalore fell short by 25 runs. Fans identified her dismissal as the turning point of the match. This knock also earned her the orange cap for some time. Her teammate, all-rounder Sophie Devine, acknowledged Mandhana’s outstanding innings during the post-match conference, expressing pride in her performance and emphasizing that both the team and Devine herself were extremely proud of her efforts.

Maximum number of sixes in a WPL match history

There were raining boundaries and maximums in the match between Banglore and Delhi, with a total of 19 sixes recorded, marking the highest number in the Women’s Premier League. The Capitals alone struck 11 sixes, contributing significantly to Delhi’s impressive total of 194 runs, the highest in the WPL 2024 season.

 

Shafali, Capsey: the future of cricket

Both youngsters of the Delhi Capitals, Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey, showcased brilliant performances in the match, with Shafali scoring a half-century and Capsey contributing 46 runs for the Capitals. Fans lauded their display, emphasizing that it felt like witnessing the future unfold in the present moment.

 

Jonassen and Kapp’s magical spell

Marizanne Kapp’s remarkable performance earned her the Player of the Match award as she scored 32 runs, including 2 boundaries and 3 maximums, at an impressive strike rate of 200, she also claimed 2 crucial wickets.
