Bio:

Chamari Athapththu’s impact on Sri Lankan women’s cricket is unparalleled, she was awarded as the women’s cricketer of the year 2016-17 at the Sri Lanka Cricket’s annual awards. She became the first Sri Lankan woman to play franchise cricket, her contributions led to the announcement of ‘Chamari Bay’ a dedicated seating zone at the Sydney cricket ground in her honor in November 2023 for a game. She holds the distinction of being the only Sri Lankan woman cricketer to score an ODI century on 28 April 2011 against Ireland, a record for the highest WODI score of 178 not out along with the highest ODI average for Sri Lanka in T20. Atapattu is the first Sri Lankan batswoman to pass 1000 runs and is the leading run-scorer in both formats for her team.

Despite initially being overlooked during the WBBL 2023-24 player draft, Chamari made a significant impact after being bought by Sydney Thunder as an overseas replacement. Her inclusion proved to be a masterstroke as she showcased her exceptional skills both with the bat and ball as she scored a total of 511 runs in 13 innings at an impressive average of 42.58 with a strike rate of 127.18, additionally, she secured nine wickets at an average of 25.55 with an excellent economy rate of 6.79. Chamari’s stellar all-round display made her achieve the title of WBBL player of the tournament solidifying her status as a standout performer in the world of women’s cricket.

Her rewarding WBBL form led her to sign with Northern Brave for Super Smash where she accumulated a score of 221 runs in 9 innings with a 128.48 strike rate and 9 wickets in 9 innings. Unsold at the auctions, she is backed as the replacement for Lauren Bell for the UP Warriorz in this year’s WPL.
