For years, Australia have set the gold standard in women’s cricket- ruthless, disciplined, and almost unbeatable on the world stage. But in the semi-final 2 of the Women’s World Cup 2025, the defending champions saw their dream of yet another title come to an abrupt halt, as India handed them a five-wicket defeat to storm into the final and ended their 15-match winning streak.

Coming into the semifinal unbeaten, Australia looked every bit the powerhouse they’ve always been. Their campaign began with a commanding 89-run win over New Zealand, followed by a 107-run victory against Pakistan. Against India in the group stage, they chased down a formidable 330-run target, setting a tone of authority early on.
Their dominance continued with a 10-wicket win over Bangladesh and a six-wicket triumph over England, ensuring they finished the league stage on top and unbeaten. With each game, they reinforced their status as the most complete team in the tournament.
Individually, it was a campaign filled with standout performances. Ashleigh Gardner struck a brilliant 115, while Beth Mooney anchored key innings, including a 109 against Pakistan. Captain Alyssa Healy led from the front, notching centuries of 142 and 113 in separate games, while Annabel Sutherland’s five-wicket haul showcased Australia’s bowling depth.
However, in the high-stakes semi-final against India, the tables turned. Batting first, Australia posted a challenging 338, courtesy of Phoebe Litchfield’s 119, Ellyse Perry’s 77 and Ash Gardner’s 63. Yet, for the first time this tournament, their bowling faltered. With only Kim Garth and Annabel Sutherland picking up two wickets each, the bowlers struggled to contain India’s counterattack. Fielding lapses compounded their woes, and the pressure of the chase slipped beyond control.
Australia’s unbeaten streak and title defense came to a bittersweet end. But for now, the defending champions bow out, their reign momentarily broken and a new challenger awaits the crown.
