Sophie Morris and Kate Cross Star as Lancashire Women Hold Off Durham in Final-Over Thriller

The 62nd match of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup at Farington delivered edge-of-the-seat drama as Lancashire Women edged out Durham Women by 3 runs in a tense, rain-curtailed 38-over battle. Durham Women won the toss and made immediate use of the friendly bowling conditions, stunning Lancashire on the very first ball of the match. Opening bowler Trudy Johnson set the tone by bowling Lancashire’s Eve Jones for a golden duck (0 off 1 ball).

Darcey Carter and Tilly Kesteven worked hard to rebuild, adding 24 runs for the second wicket before Eleanor Larosa made the breakthrough, having Kesteven caught by Katie Levick for 14 off 29 balls in the 8th over. Carter continued to anchor the top order with a patient 45 off 87 balls (1 four), forming a 43-run third-wicket stand alongside captain Eleanor Threlkeld. Threlkeld scored a steady 21 off 31 balls before offering a return catch to Sophia Turner in the 21st over.

Lancashire’s middle order struggled to generate boundary momentum as Durham’s disciplined attack kept tightening the screws. Katie Levick dismissed Skye Thomas for 6 off 11 balls, leaving the score at 86 for 4 in the 24th over, and then bowled the set Carter to break the dangerous partnership at 99 for 5. Seren Smale emerged as the primary scorer down the stretch, striking a brisk 36 off 35 balls. Smale joined forces with Fi Morris (20 off 22 balls) to add 36 runs for the sixth wicket before Larosa bowled Morris in the 34th over.

Johnson returned late in the innings to break Smale’s resistance and remove Grace Potts for a duck off consecutive overs. A clever late cameo from Kate Cross (15 not out off 10 balls) alongside Tara Norris (1 not out off 1 ball) pushed Lancashire to a competitive total of 169 for 8 from their allotted 38 overs.

Durham’s bowling effort was anchored by Trudy Johnson (3/27 in 8 overs), Katie Levick (2/33 in 8 overs), Eleanor Larosa (2/31 in 8 overs), and Sophia Turner (1/40 in 7 overs), while Grace Thompson went wicketless despite a solid 7-over spell yielding 32 runs.

Chasing a revised target of 170 in 38 overs, Durham Women constructed a solid foundation through openers Mia Rogers and Emma Marlow. The pair put together a watchful 35-run opening stand before spinner Sophie Morris dismantled the top order, bowling Rogers for 18 off 26 balls in the 9th over.

Marlow ground out 24 off 40 balls before falling to Sophie Morris in the 13th over, leaving Durham at 53 for 2. Durham captain Hollie Armitage then stepped up to play a captain’s knock, top-scoring in the match with 54 off 73 balls. Armitage shared a 16-run stand with Emily Windsor (8 off 18 balls) before Windsor was stumped by Threlkeld off Sophie Morris.

The match appeared to swing in Durham’s favor as Armitage joined forces with Bess Heath for a brisk 71-run fourth-wicket partnership. Heath played an aggressive knock, smashing 43 off 48 balls before veteran pacer Kate Cross turned the game back in Lancashire’s favor by having Heath caught by Potts in the 32nd over at 140 for 4.

What followed was a thrilling, dramatic collapse: Cross bowled Grace Thompson for a duck on the very next ball (140 for 5), Fi Morris trapped Eleanor Larosa for 2 (145 for 6), and Sophie Morris had Katherine Fraser caught for 2 (150 for 7).

When Sophia Turner was run out by Fi Morris for 3, Durham found themselves reeling at 161 for 8. The killer blow arrived in the 38th over when Cross dismissed the set Armitage for 54, reducing Durham to 161 for 9. Trudy Johnson (1 not out off 2 balls) and Katie Levick (3 not out off 3 balls) battled valiantly in the final over, but Durham ultimately fell just short, finishing on 166 for 9 in 38 overs.
