In the 16th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa triumphed over Bangladesh by 7 wickets, successfully chasing down a modest total of 107 with 16 balls to spare.
Bangladesh, having opted to bat first after captain Nigar Sultana Joty won the toss, posted 106 for 3. Despite a slow innings, they were able to add crucial runs in the final overs. Sobhana Mostary was the top scorer for Bangladesh with a composed 38 off 43 balls, while Rani showed glimpses of potential before being dismissed.
Sultana also contributed with some well-placed shots, but the team struggled to build momentum. South Africa’s bowlers kept things tight, with Nonkululeko Mlaba, Marizanne Kapp, and Annerie Dercksen each claiming a wicket.
Chasing 107, South Africa rarely seemed troubled. Although they lost in-form skipper Laura Wolvaardt early, Bangladesh’s fielding lapses – including four dropped catches and missed run-out chances – let South Africa off the hook. Tazmin Brits anchored the chase with a steady 42 off 41, forming a crucial partnership with Anneke Bosch. After their dismissals, Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon comfortably guided their team to victory.
Brits’ match-winning knock earned her the Player of the Match award, with fans taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate South Africa’s dominant performance.
