In their tournament opener, England secured a hard-fought 21-run victory over Bangladesh in the sixth match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Bangladesh found themselves unable to overcome England’s disciplined all-round performance.
With the dew factor playing a minimal role so far, Heather Knight’s decision to bat first aimed at putting a competitive total on the board.
England started brightly, reaching 47/0 at the end of the powerplay, but their momentum faltered soon after. At 71/2 after 11 overs, they found themselves struggling to build on the strong foundation, managing just 26 runs in the next 7 overs while losing three key wickets. Danielle Wyatt-Hodge’s composed 41 from 40 balls provided some stability, but the Bangladesh bowlers, led by Nahida Akter, Fahima Khatun, and Ritu Moni, who each claimed two wickets, ensured England never broke free.
Despite England’s batting struggles, their bowling unit delivered when it mattered. Fielding four spinners, England applied relentless pressure, even though Sophie Ecclestone went wicketless. Bangladesh, unable to keep pace with the required run rate, found themselves on the back foot. Sobhana Mostary’s valiant 44 off 48 was the only real resistance, as the rest of the batting line-up faltered against England’s spin attack.
Wyatt-Hodge was named Player of the Match for her standout batting performance, and England’s clinical display sparked widespread praise on social media platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter), with fans hailing the dominance of English spinners. They also acknowledged the valiant effort by Bangladesh.

Fantastic performance by Danni Wyatt-Hodge! That 41 was not just a number, it was the backbone of the innings. Well deserved @aramco POTM award! 🏏 #T20WorldCup #ENGvBAN

Having just 118 on the Scoreboard, still bowling 16 overs of spin ( 1st time ever in History) & Defended the Score that too by 21 Runs. 🙇🤯#ENGvBAN | #T20WomensWorldCup #T20WorldCup2024 | #T20WorldCup pic.twitter.com/d77cL73VrC

Some bowling performance here from Bangladesh’s women against England. Hope The Hundred franchises are watching. BD’s batting hasn’t been brilliant – but can they pull something special off in Sharjah? #ENGvBAN #T20WomensWorldCup

The team has elite spinners like Dean, Ecclestone, and Glenn. But Linsey has been a hidden gem with her economy and key wickets. Jon Lewis has some tough calls to make.#T20WorldCup2024
