Statistical Analysis: Who were the top performers of the Women’s Super Smash 2024/2025?

A total of six teams, namely Central Hinds, Canterbury Magicians, Northern Brave, Auckland Hearts, Wellington Blaze, and Otago Sparks participated in the recently concluded 2024-25 season of the Women’s Super Smash, New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition.

Wellington Blaze, led by skipper Amelia Kerr, continued its dominant run in the tournament, clinching their ninth title in an eighth consecutive Final appearance. The tournament was nothing short of a spectacle of talent, full of thrillers and blockbuster action.

Team Seedings:

Central Hinds:

The Central Hinds led by skipper Mikaela Greig, had a tournament nothing short of a nightmare as they just managed a solitary victory against the Canterbury Magicians. As a result, they relinquished at the bottom of the table with just 6 points from 10 games. Their campaign also included a washout game against Northern Brave.

The 27-year-old English international batter Hollie Armitage was the leading run scorer for her side and the 7th-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 247 runs at a strike rate of 103.78 and an impressive average of 49.40 in seven innings. Her best performance with the bat for Central Hinds came on 17th January 2025 against Canterbury Magicians when she scored an unbeaten half-century, 72* (59 balls) guiding her side over the line.

Claudia Green was the leading wicket-taker as she picked up 10 wickets in 9 innings.

Canterbury Magicians:

Canterbury Magicians led by skipper Laura Hughes also had a disappointing campaign in the recently concluded edition of the tournament as the lack of consistency haunted them, as they just managed four victories against Central Hinds, Northern Brave, Auckland Hearts, and Otago Sparks in the tournament. As a result, they finished at the 5th position in the points table accounting for 16 points from 10 games.

The 28-year-old Kate Anderson was the leading run-scorer for her side and the 4th-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 294 runs at a strike rate of 105.37 and an impressive average of 32.66 in 10 innings. Her best performance with the bat for Canterbury Magicians came on 10th January 2025 when she scored a brilliant unbeaten half-century (75* off 54 balls) against Auckland Hearts guiding her side over the line.

The 35-year-old veteran Indian pacer Shikha Pandey was the joint-highest leading wicket-taker with the ball for her side with 9 wickets in 10 innings alongside Melissa Banks.

Northern Brave:

Northern Brave led by skipper Jess Watkin had a decent campaign as they finished 4th at the points table with 22 points from 10 games with four victories against Canterbury Magicians, Otago Sparks, Auckland Hearts, and Central Hinds. Their campaign also included three washed-out games against the eventual champions Wellington Blaze, Central Hinds, and Auckland Hearts. The Jess Watkin-led side’s campaign came to an end courtesy of a 23-run defeat to the eventual champions Wellington Blaze in the Eliminator.

The star Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu was the leading run-scorer for her side with 219 runs at a sensational strike rate of 134.35 and an impressive average of 31.28 in seven innings. Her best performance with the bat for Northern Brave came on 13th January 2025 against Auckland Hearts, when she scored a brilliant half-century (71 off 52 balls).

Athapaththu was also the leading wicket-taker for her side and the 3rd highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 wickets at an impressive average of 11.33 and an economy of 5.48 in 8 innings. Her best performance with the ball for Northern Brave came on 6th January 2025 against Central Hinds when she returned with outstanding match figures (4-1-16-4) in her spell at Saxton Oval, Nelson.

Auckland Hearts:

The Hearts led by skipper Maddy Green also had a decent campaign in the 2024-25 Super Smash as they finished 3rd on the points table with 22 points from 10 games including five victories against Central Hinds, Canterbury Magicians, Wellington Blaze and Otago Sparks. The first game of their campaign against Northern Brave was washed out.

Lauren Down was the leading run-scorer for the Auckland Hearts and the 3rd highest run-scorer of the tournament with 304 runs at a strike rate of 108.18 and an impressive average of 36.22 in 9 innings. Her tally of runs included one unbeaten half-century (50* off 48 balls) against Central Hinds on 29th January 2025.

Fran Jonas was the leading wicket-taker for her side and the joint 5th highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 14 wickets at an average of 16.35 and an economy of 6.02 in 10 innings with the ball for her side. Her best performance with the ball for Auckland Hearts came on 3rd January 2025 against Canterbury Magicians when she returned with outstanding match figures of 4-0-13-3.

Wellington Blaze:

The Blaze led by skipper Amelia Kerr had an impressive campaign in the tournament as they finished 2nd on the points table with 26 points from 10 games, which included only three defeats against the Auckland Hearts, and Otago Sparks. They had one washout game against the Northern Brave.

Skipper Amelia Kerr led from the front with the bat for her side as she was the leading run-scorer for her side as well as of the tournament with 441 runs at a strike rate of 108.62 and a humongous average of 63 in 12 innings. Her tally of runs includes three half-centuries, with her best performance with the bat for Wellington Blaze coming on 20th January 2025, against Auckland when she scored a sensational unbeaten half-century (75* off 60 balls).

She was also the leading wicket-taker with the ball for Wellington Blaze and was the fourth-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 wickets at an average of 17.40 and an economy of 6.06 in 11 innings. Her best performance with the ball for Wellington Blaze came on 1st January 2025 against Northern Brave, when she returned with impressive match figures (4-0-18-4) in her spell for her side.

Wellington Brave defeated Northern Brave in the Eliminator by 23 runs to book a spot in the final against Otago Sparks. They eventually clinched their 9th title in their 8th straight appearance in the final of the Super Smash tournament.

Otago Sparks:

Sparks led by skipper Hayley Jensen had a sensational campaign in the 2023-25 Smash as they topped the points table with 28 points from 10 games including 7 victories in their campaign. Caitlin Blakely was the leading run-scorer for her side with 219 runs at a strike rate of 99.09 and an average of 27.37 in 11 innings. Her best performance with the bat for Otago Sparks came on 14th January 2025 when she scored an unbeaten half-century (52* off 45 balls) against the eventual champions Wellington Blaze.

Eden Carson was the leading wicket-taker for her side and the tournament with 18 wickets at an average of 15.38 and an economy of 6.29 in 11. Her best performance with the ball for Otago Sparks in the tournament came on 12th January 2025 against Central Hinds when she returned with sensational match figures of 4-0-18-5. As a result of their top-of-the-table finish, they booked a direct spot in the Women’s Super Smash 2024-25 Final. However, they ended up as the runners-up of the tournament courtesy of their 8-run defeat in the final against Wellington Blaze at the Basin Reserve, Wellington.
