Bryony Smith, Phoebe Franklin Guide Surrey to Thrilling Two-Wicket Win Over Somerset

Surrey Women held their nerve in a gripping Women’s T20 Blast 2026 encounter at Taunton, chasing down 149 with four balls to spare to defeat Somerset Women by two wickets in a contest that swung back and forth throughout the evening. Asked to field first after winning the toss, Surrey’s bowlers managed to restrict Somerset to 148/6 in 20 overs, before their batting unit overcame regular setbacks to reach 152/8 in 19.2 overs, thanks to valuable partnerships and a composed unbeaten finish from Phoebe Franklin and Danielle Gregory.

Somerset’s innings began positively with Rebecca Odgers looking to seize the early momentum. She attacked from the outset, striking 30 off 22 balls, including three fours and a six, while building a brisk 56-run opening partnership alongside captain Sophie Luff. The opening stand gave Somerset the platform they wanted before Laura Harris struck the first blow, trapping Odgers in front with the score at 56/1 in 5.4 overs. Despite losing her opening partner, Luff continued to play positively and found support from Anika Learoyd, who contributed 19 from 21 deliveries. Together they stitched a useful 33-run second-wicket stand, carrying Somerset to 89 before Learoyd was caught by Bryony Smith off Harris in the 11th over.

Luff remained the backbone of Somerset’s innings, rotating the strike efficiently while punishing loose deliveries. Her captain’s knock of 52 from 39 balls, featuring five boundaries, ensured the innings retained momentum through the middle overs. However, Surrey’s bowlers kept chipping away at regular intervals. Niamh Holland managed only 7, adding 14 runs with Luff before becoming Harris’ third wicket at 103/3. The experienced Alex Griffiths then made 8, putting on 23 runs with Luff, but Danielle Gregory removed her at 126/4 in the 16.6th over, keeping Somerset from accelerating freely during the death overs.

Luff’s dismissal proved another crucial moment. Attempting to push the scoring rate higher, she was stumped by Jemima Spence off Laura Harris after adding a two-run stand with Jess Hazell, departing for a well-crafted half-century at 128/5 in 17.3 overs. Hazell then played an entertaining cameo of 10 from just 8 balls, striking at 125, while sharing a 20-run partnership with the unbeaten Ruby Davis, who remained 8 not out from 8 deliveries. Hazell was run out in the penultimate over with the total on 148/6, while Somerset also benefited from 14 extras, eventually posting 148/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Surrey’s bowling performance was led impressively by Laura Harris, whose spell of 3 for 16 from three overs combined control with timely breakthroughs. She removed Rebecca Odgers, Anika Learoyd and Sophie Luff, finishing with a superb economy rate of 5.33. Danielle Gregory supported well with 1 for 23 from four overs, claiming Alex Griffiths at an important stage, while Anna Buckle delivered an economical spell of 0 for 20 in three overs. Kalea Moore also bowled tightly, conceding 27 runs from four overs, and although Alice Monaghan went wicketless despite picking up a stumping through Jemima Spence, Bethan Miles chipped in with the wicket of Niamh Holland to ensure Somerset never completely broke free.

Chasing 149, Surrey suffered an early setback when Paige Scholfield departed for 10 after a 30-run opening partnership with captain Bryony Smith. Scholfield was caught by Sophie Luff off Maddie Russell in the fourth over. Smith, however, continued to dictate the innings with authority, mixing calculated aggression with sensible strike rotation. She was joined by Laura Harris, whose sparkling 26 from just 12 balls, including three fours and two sixes, completely shifted the momentum. Their explosive 33-run second-wicket partnership lifted Surrey beyond fifty before Harris was caught by Erin Vukusic off Olivia Barnes at 63/2 in 6.6 overs.

Smith then added 28 runs with wicketkeeper Jemima Spence, who contributed a handy 13 from 11 balls, before Spence became Rebecca Odgers’ catch off Laura Harris. At 91/3, Surrey remained in control, but Somerset refused to let the game drift away. Smith and Alice Monaghan combined for another 33-run partnership, taking Surrey to 124, with Smith reaching a fluent 63 off 51 deliveries, decorated with 10 boundaries. Her dismissal, caught by Ruby Davis off Maddie Russell in the 15th over, brought Somerset firmly back into the contest.

The chase suddenly became tense as Somerset struck repeatedly. Alice Monaghan made 6, adding just 9 runs with Smith before falling to a catch by Ruby Davis off Maddie Russell. Aylish Cranstone managed only 1, with Erin Vukusic striking immediately, while Kalea Moore scored 1 before Niamh Holland dismissed her. Bethan Miles was then bowled for 0 by Holland, reducing Surrey from a comfortable position to 148/8 in 18.4 overs. Despite the collapse, Phoebe Franklin displayed excellent composure under pressure. Her unbeaten 19 from only 9 balls, featuring three boundaries, proved decisive. Together with Danielle Gregory, who remained 0 not out, Franklin guided Surrey through the closing stages with an unbeaten four-run ninth-wicket partnership, while Surrey also collected 13 extras to finish on 152/8 in 19.2 overs, securing victory with four balls remaining.

Somerset’s bowlers fought admirably to defend a moderate total. Maddie Russell was the standout performer, claiming 3 for 22 from three overs, dismissing Paige Scholfield, Bryony Smith and Alice Monaghan at critical moments. Niamh Holland also made a major impact with 3 for 22 in four overs, cleaning up Kalea Moore and Bethan Miles after earlier removing Bryony Smith. Olivia Barnes bowled accurately to return 1 for 29 from three overs, while Erin Vukusic picked up 1 for 31 in four overs by dismissing Aylish Cranstone. Laura Harris contributed another wicket with 1 for 28 from 3.2 overs, removing Jemima Spence, while Alex Griffiths remained wicketless but maintained pressure during her two-over spell.
