Jemima Spence’s 31-Ball 52 Sinks Essex Women Despite Scrivens’ Unbeaten 85

Surrey Women chased down the target with composure and attacking intent to secure a five-wicket victory over Essex Women in the Women’s T20 Blast 2026 clash at The Oval, London. In a contest shaped by Grace Scrivens’ superb unbeaten knock and Jemima Spence’s explosive counterattack, Surrey Women held their nerve to complete the chase with 14 balls to spare, finishing on 149/5 in 17.4 overs after Essex Women posted 145/6 in 20 overs.

The match began with Surrey Women opting to bowl first after winning the toss, a decision that initially paid dividends as Essex Women found it difficult to build momentum despite Grace Scrivens standing tall at one end. Essex’s innings suffered an early setback when Alice Macleod struggled to accelerate and was involved in a run-out after scoring 7 off 8 balls, leaving the score at 36/1 in 3.5 overs. Before that dismissal, Macleod and captain Grace Scrivens had provided a steady opening stand of 36 runs, giving Essex Women a platform without fully dominating the powerplay.

After the first wicket, Liberty Heap joined Scrivens at the crease and tried to keep the scoreboard moving. The pair stitched together 29 runs for the second wicket, but Surrey found a breakthrough when Alice Monaghan removed Heap for 9 off 15 deliveries, caught by Alice Davidson-Richards at 65/2 in 8.4 overs. Essex then looked to rebuild through Jodi Grewcock, who added valuable momentum with 19 runs off 16 balls, striking fluently while sharing a productive 43-run partnership with Scrivens. However, another run-out halted Grewcock’s progress at 108/3 in 15.4 overs, denying Essex the chance to fully capitalise during the middle overs.

Despite wickets falling around her, opener Grace Scrivens remained the heartbeat of the Essex innings. Playing with authority and precision, she crafted a magnificent unbeaten 85 off 63 balls, smashing 10 fours and a six at a strike rate of 134.92. Scrivens anchored every phase of the innings, ensuring Essex remained competitive. After Grewcock’s departure, Joanne Gardner chipped in with 8 off 9 balls, adding 25 runs for the fourth wicket, before falling to Alice Monaghan at 133/4 in 18.1 overs. The late overs brought further wickets as Florence Miller managed 7 from 7 balls before being bowled by Kalea Moore, while Sophia Smale departed for a duck in the final over. Essex eventually closed on 145/6, with Amara Carr unbeaten on 2.

Surrey Women’s bowling performance was disciplined rather than dominant, with multiple contributors ensuring Essex never fully broke free. Kalea Moore emerged as the standout performer, returning 2/19 from her four overs, including crucial late breakthroughs that stalled Essex’s finishing charge. Alice Monaghan also impressed, claiming 2/26 in four overs, dismissing both Heap and Gardner at key moments. Ryana MacDonald-Gay bowled with control, finishing with 1/23 from four overs, while Bethan Miles conceded just 26 runs in her two overs. Danielle Gregory kept things tidy with 1/24, and Alice Davidson-Richards chipped in with two overs despite proving expensive.

Chasing 146 for victory, Surrey Women’s reply had moments of instability but was fuelled by aggressive batting and timely partnerships. Essex struck early when Bryony Smith was dismissed for 7 off 9 balls by Sophie Munro, leaving Surrey at 20/1 in 3.3 overs. The second wicket fell soon after as Kira Chathli battled for 12 off 17 balls before being trapped lbw by Eva Gray, with Surrey slipping to 24/2 in 4.6 overs.

The pressure, however, eased thanks to a lively partnership between Paige Scholfield and Jemima Spence. The duo added 24 runs for the third wicket, with Scholfield making a brisk 17 off 11 deliveries before falling to Florence Miller at 48/3 in 7.1 overs. That dismissal only brought out the best in Jemima Spence, who launched a counterattacking innings that shifted the momentum firmly towards Surrey. Spence smashed 52 off just 31 balls, hammering nine boundaries at a strike rate of 167.74, while forging a game-defining 51-run stand with Alice Monaghan. Monaghan contributed a composed 19 from 18 balls, but after her dismissal at 99/4 in 13.1 overs, Essex sensed an opening.

Yet Surrey refused to panic. Laura Harris, unbeaten on 29 from 18 balls, provided the finishing touch with powerful strokeplay, combining first with Spence in an important 18-run partnership before Spence departed at 117/5 in 14.6 overs. Harris then ensured there would be no late collapse, sharing an unbeaten 32-run stand with Alice Davidson-Richards, who struck 6 not out off 3 balls, as Surrey comfortably crossed the finish line at 149/5 in 17.4 overs.

For Essex Women, the bowling effort showed flashes of promise but lacked consistency during the chase. Sophie Munro was the pick of the attack with 2/30 in four overs, removing Smith and Spence. Eva Gray delivered economically with 1/22 in 3.4 overs, while Jodi Grewcock and Grace Scrivens chipped in with a wicket each. However, Sophia Smale proved expensive, conceding 38 runs in four overs, which allowed Surrey Women to maintain control in the latter stages.
