The ninth edition of the women’s Asia Cup, from 19th July to 28th July in the T20 format, currently being played in Sri Lanka, has eight participating teams divided into two groups.
The hosts faced Malaysia in the seventh match of the women’s Asia Cup. Sri Lanka elected to bat first adding a mountain of a total of 184 & eventually winning the match by a massive 144 runs to secure a spot in the knockouts.
Highlights from the match:
1) Chamari Athapaththu 119* (Sri Lanka)
Chamari Athapaththu displayed a batting masterclass in Lanka’s clash against Malaysia in the women’s Asia Cup. The left-handed batter scored a magnificent century which helped the Islanders put up 184/4 on the board, the second-highest team total in the women’s T20 Asia Cup. Chamari became the first batter to score a century in the women’s T20 Asia Cup. She was involved in a 115-run partnership for the third wicket when the Islanders lost their second wicket for 69 in the form of Harshitha Samarawickrama (26). The 115-run partnership was also the third highest in the women’s T20 Asia Cup.

2) Winifred Duraisingam 2/34 (Malaysia)
The Malaysian skipper grabbed two wickets against the Lankan side. Winifred was wicketless in her first three overs, she came into a ball in the last over of Lanka’s innings. She first dismissed the wicket-keeper batter of Lanka in the form of Anushka Sanjeewani for 31 which also ended the 115-run stand between Chamari Athapaththu & Sanjeewani. It was followed by a golden duck of Kavisha Dilhari where Winifred rattled her stumps.

3) Shashini Gimhani 3/9 (Sri Lanka)
The left-arm wrist spinner picked up two wickets in her first Asia Cup match for the Lankan side. She didn’t play the first match but was brought into the side for this game against Malaysia. She put up a stunning display with her first wicket coming after castling the stumps of Malaysian opener Wan Julia followed by Elsa Hunter for 10 in the same way. Her third wicket had also come in the form of bowled, dismissing Aisya Eleesa.
4) Kavisha Dilhari 2/4 (Sri Lanka)
The Lankan all-rounder with her off-spin claimed 2 wickets against Malaysia. Though she was brought late into the attack it didn’t affect her from grabbing wickets. Her first wicket came in the form of Suabika Manivannan which was followed by a golden duck of Nur Syafiqa. She finished with figures of 2 for 4 in three overs which included a maiden over.
